Nikon D7100 Opinions
Looking at possibly purchasing a new camera to replace a bridge one I currently have.
Have been looking at the Nikon D7100 as this seems a well regarded camera. Just wanted to know what people opinions of it were seeing as it's now a few years old.
It's right at the top end of my budget when I have paired it with a Tamron 18-270mm lens (which seems to be a good all rounder) but didn't know what else would be considered as an alternative body that's maybe newer (or if that even matters)?
My main use of it would be for family / travel / landscape etc. Taking it to airshows would only be a secondary consideration and I would hire a lens for those occasions.
Cheers

Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
It may be an oldie but it's a real goodie! Well built and dependable. I bought mine new a year ago and have no complaints. It's been replaced by the D7200 but in my opinion the newer model doesn't offer any improvements that would make me want to upgrade. I have noticed though that the D7100 is now £100 dearer than when I bought mine. Has the Brexit vote anything to do with that I wonder?
If budget is a concern I wouldn't rule out the secondhand market. You should be able to pick up a near mint condition low shutter count D7100 from a reputable dealer for around £500 or so if you shop around. I have used Wex and Ffordes for secondhand equipment and have been very satisfied with their service.
Hope this helps.

Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
MPB have got second hand , excellent condition D7100 with 5774 shots for £500. I'm looking at upgrading to a D7100 from D3200 once I get the money!
Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
Ffordes currently have a boxed mint minus D7100 with similar shutter count for £499.

Cheers guys. Second hand prices are pretty good. Just need to sell some other gear to get the cash together.

Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
You can get a brand new Nikon D3300 for about £300 and put the savings to a faster lens.
It's light , 24mps. Does require AF-S lenses but if upgrading from a bridge you are buying a new lens.

Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
The 7100 was replaced by the 7200, which in turn has also been replaced by the 7500. I'm looking at getting my first DSLR and was looking at the 7200, but I've been looking at the 5600 as well, the only things against the 5600 is the feel of the camera in the hand, just feels cheap and flimsy and no top LCD. Bear in mind that the 7100 was released 7 years ago, so technology has improved and I understand there is no benefit in upgrading from the 7100 to the 7200, but if buying into the market for the first time like myself I would always go for the newer model(unless of course it was worse than what it replaces).
Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
According to some photography magazines the D7500 isn't replacing the D7200, but will be placed between the D7200 and the D500 in Nikon's line-up. It's certainly quite a hike in price over the D7200.
Given budget restrictions I think the D7100 would still be a good buy, despite its age.

Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
Most definitely, nothing wrong with the 7100 and as Slogen51 mentions it's the lens that makes the photo, so getting a semi decent camera(I think that applies to all Nikons) and couple with a better quality lens, will give substantially better results. However the 7100/7200 is a hefty beast of a camera at 765g, which is 300g heavier than the 5600 both without lens fitted(7100/7200 feels so good to hold though), but if you intend to use it for travelling then maybe not the best choice.daggerfan wrote:Given budget restrictions I think the D7100 would still be a good buy, despite its age.
Both have good points that trade off against one another, it all depends on what you really need from it, which is the hard part.
Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
Thunder, I know what you mean in your earlier comments re D5600. I had a D5100 that I used for holidays and general photography. Bought it secondhand on a whim but I never really got on with it. It gave excellent results, but just didn't handle well for me. I didn't have it for long!
The D7100, on the other hand, handles beautifully and feels like you are using something solid and reliable.
At the end of the day you just have to try out the handling of a few cameras and then decide what's best for your needs.

Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
I have no complains what so ever with my d7100 and with my photo above taken with it and the excellent nikkor 300 f4 af ed prime, its also a rather large crop from the original so its bound to be a bit soft.

Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
Just to add my personnel opinion and experience. I went from the Nikon D80 to the D300s and then bought a D5300 to sit along side the D300s for improved ISO performance. The D5300 (and it's successors) is a great camera. It's physically smaller than the D7xxx series and has less button on the outside meaning you have to use the menu's to change settings like white balance and ISO. Only you can decide if that suits or hinders your style of shooting. I found the white balance on the D5300 to be a little unpredictable. Mostly it was OK but sometimes is was a bit blue. Also it tended to underexposure anywhere from 1/3 to half a stop. I think (and I'm sure I've ready) that's common on consumer DSLR's to protect highlights, but it's annoying when shooting aircraft in the sky against white clouds as the aircraft will be under-exposed.
About 18 months ago I 'up graded' to the D7200 and love it. I was holding out for a D300s replacement and jumped before the D500 came out! Having had the D7200 for a year and mulling over whether to get a D500 I've decided to get a second D7200 as a second camera used from MPB. The only reason I didn't get a used D7100 was the top menu is slightly different and I wanted two identical camera's.
Going back to the first question; I'd look for a used D7100 and spend the difference on a better telephoto lens. The first generation Tameron 150-600 £624 from MPB and the excellent Nikon 55-300 is only £159.
Hope that helps...

Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
I recently upgraded from a D5300 to the D7200. My thoughts would be that unless you can afford the step up to the D7500, D500 or go full frame then go for the D7200. I pair it with a a Sigma 50-500, with no OS, and it's superb, even in low light.
Of course better lens now, and upgrade the body later is a good option. Bodies come and go. Lenses are forever(ish).

I've decide to go with the Canon 80D, coupled with the Sigma 18-250.Thunder wrote:The 7100 was replaced by the 7200, which in turn has also been replaced by the 7500. Re: Nikon D7100 Opinions
In what way, the lens?
I looked at all the main 'superzoom' lenses Canon 18-200, Tamron 18-250/270 and the Sigma and there wasn't much a difference if any in picture quality between them. The Canon won the game at max focal length(50mm less than the others), wide open aperture and a 100% crop but how often are you going to be in that situation?

Just an interesting comparison nikon v canon both have the strengths and weaknesses, as I have had both but come back to nikon as I love the whole nikon thing, and my nikkoe 300mm f4 prime is just the best lens I have ever had, and the d7100 isn't bad either
