The Mound CLOSED 11.5.17
Re: The Mound CLOSED 11.5.17
Knowing it was a PDA day kept me AWAY today. I go to a show to see this sort of thing, I just want a normal ops day when I visit, and will more than likely do next Wednesday. If that's a PDA day I'll go somewhere else. If people want to go and risk their necks watching a practice crack on, I'd rather not for multiple reasons.
I'm not a huge photographer, but will take a shot if it allows and I'm not listening to them on the boxes.

I can't speak for Reedham but there are plenty down Old Fen Lane, drove past and waved to some lovely police officers watching the Typhoons come and go

No diffrence if one goes down on the official car park viewing area. The mounds not been a issue for the last 20 years.Tronk 11 wrote:Being devils advocate here. But IF a jet or prop go down on the public hitting a mound full of photographers the implications of watching aircraft at bases doesn't bear thinking about. The flight line south of the base needs to be clear for safety, end of. You can kiss goodbye to most photography if a crash happened.
I'm just grateful to what we can get and I think a lot of people here should have a word with themselves. A bit to much me, me, me, locals, locals, locals. Bigger fences and security aren't meant for us! They are there to protect our assets, crying about bigger fences and access won't get people anywhere. It's a price we have to pay.
Rant over.
Why the problem now.

In a word. Shoreham.
Re: The Mound CLOSED 11.5.17
Plus the mound is right on the flight line, the official car park is on what would be the crowd line.

Except it isn't. The displays at Coningsby are flown towards the control tower i.e. the control tower being where the public would be - with Runway 07/25 being the display line. The official car park is not where the crowd would be.
Re: The Mound CLOSED 11.5.17
Really. I've always watched previous displays on the south side. Is it different now?
Re: The Mound CLOSED 11.5.17
Looking at a map and the official car park is on the exact same datum line as the tower namely the crowd line. Sorry.

Just seems typical of the nanny state we live in nowadays.
But the PDA day aside, the worrying part is the mention of how they will consider its future in due course. Doesn't sound good

Best way to get rid of the mound would be to dig a big hole and bury it I reckon.....
Re: The Mound CLOSED 11.5.17
Another PDA over, People were allowed down Reedham Lane,
Old Fen Lane and what the locals call "The Red arrows " Field.
Both the MOD Police and Civil Police had no problems with us
on the south side as we are in the same place every year.
The "Mound" is Mr Casey's spare soil store, Over the years it has
got smaller.
Regards.

Harkins and C24, I'm afraid you have another brother in gloom, but on the bright side in five years or thereabouts there won't be much worth photographing, Lazy days!
Re: The Mound CLOSED 11.5.17
On the bright side....Hate to confess but I actually enjoyed three hours 'plane watching' at Manchester Airport picking my wife and mother up from flight from Gibraltar. Not many minutes of no action.
Some days up here Lossie way ( now they stole Leuchars fir the army) not worth the long wait between movements. Never mind the 3 hour drive! ..

Unfortunately at Coningsby, as at Lakenheath, the "Official" car park is up sun of the runway for most of the day. So photographers prefer the mound, etc,. Then there was the "Naughty Field" mound on the south side of Duxford which was brilliant for display photos, and people would walk a long way to it.
The problem I suppose is numbers, never had any problems at Wethersfield, which had no fence, in filming multiple U2C launches. Nor TR1s at Alconbury which had 3 wire strand low fence until hooligan peace campaigners march line abreast through the farmers crop.
With regard to Shoreham, are they going to either (1) close Heathrow, (2) move London or (3) build a third runway? And what happens when a whole plane finally crashes in London; things frequently fall out of planes over central London, hence the name Battersea.

And what do either of them have to do with a pile of earth at Coningsby?
Re: The Mound CLOSED 11.5.17
I am surprised that no-one else has posted something like this.
" What on earth is this post about? ". " Aren't we making a mountain out of a molehill? ". " Peace on earth ".
