Polish Air Force/Government Il-76?

Post by LecLightning56 » Fri Apr 28, 2017 6:49 am

I recall seeing a Polish Il-76 at an undisclosed airfield in June 2000 (I remember seeing the Polish flag on the fin). Searching on the internet, I have only found one reference to Poland ever having had the aircraft. Does anyone have any information about these aircraft in Polish service and any references to their operational history?

I don't think you will find that the Poles have ever operated Il76's, military or civil.

I am not aware of any Polish 76 civil or military.

Where was this undisclosed airfield - it may help us delve.

The airfield in question was actually Keflavik in Iceland. Not renowned for records in enthusiasts' publications!

"Not renowned for records in enthusiasts' publications!""

Maybe but they've got several well extablished photographers that have been shooting all the the things of interest that route via Kef since at least the 1970s.

The only Ilyushin transports they had were 'propeller jobs' being Il-14 (two-engined) and Il-18 (four-engined).

They also had two Antonov An-12, perhaps it was one of these?

I can't find any references to them having operated IL-76's .

Maybe you made a mistake on the flag , take a look at the list of Countries at the bottom and see if the flag is amongst them , might make it easier to track down .

Poland never operated the IL-76. The only operator was Joy Cargo in the early 90s. Most likely Belorus operator.

I concur with your belief and I might have got the Polish Flag confused with the Belarus flag which probably makes the aircraft one of the Ruby Star aircraft. I did manage to contact a prolific photographer in Iceland who very kindly gave my request a lot of thought but had no record of the Il-76 in question (and admits to bein a keen photographer only, not a spotter).
