USAF C17 Norwich Airport???

Post by Will24 » Thu Apr 20, 2017 6:26 am

Hi all,

I don't think I'm going mad but a few years ago did a C17 have to divert to Norwich airport due to low fuel? :S

I've tried searching on the internet but can't find anything!

Hopefully someone can tell me if I'm going mad or it did happen haha

Cheers
Will

yes you are correct 02.1100 did indeed divert in - Easter , date 22.03.2008.
Saw it land myself & depart later in the day
The winds were out of limits at MHall (& weren't really any better @ Norwich), but as it was Easter few other fields were open.
Even Brize was too far for him, so must have been running on fumes !

I was at Mildenhall that day and remember a C-17A attempting to land and looked scary as the left hand wing looked very, very close to the ground. Think it could have been the one that went to Norwich. Just for info I logged the following.

98-0055
01-0194
02-1100
06-6156
06-6157
06-6158

IIRC, it also snowed :-(

i6720. With respect, I very much doubt that he as running on fumes. Flight decks are MUCH more organised than that. He would have known his alternatives long before getting anywhere near a critical point. Alternatives are discussed before take-off and amended if necessary down route. If going to Mildenhall, then Norwich was a much better option that Brize, and is well within the aircraft's capabilities with the right amount of load. IF he was running on fumes, as you say, then there are at least two military Pilots who were shortly after out of a job!!!.

your probably right, actually your right. I would have thought that going to Brize may have taken his fuel load below a certain safety level, whilst no immediate danger, it would have involved serious questions and form filling, of course we don't know the history of the flight, diverted, held in the air waiting for clearance,,a whole host of things may have happened,,,,,, anyway it got me thinking, I'm over 50 and can only recall one aircraft ever having to land because of fuel shortage, it was a Sunday and it was an F16, landed at Lakenheath and ran out of fuel on the taxi way, he'd tried to land at Alconbury, Upper Heyford, Bentwaters and a few others and was turned away, pop eye approach was called and he cam out of the clouds at such an angel we thought he'd crashed, but there he was canopy open just of the runway, waiting for a tow, I did read somewhere that a group of RAF jets crashed on approach to Coltishall, from memory, all ran out of fuel due to a mis calculation, don't think id like to have been responsible for that one.

Hi, Bob. Yes, it was the day six Hunters were lost. Don't do dates and times, or serials, but they all got caught out by weather that was worse than forecast [north sea haar???] and were ejecting and force landing all over the place. Sadly one fatality during a forced landing. Very well known and well documented disastrous day.Regards, John.
P.S. Not sure why the F.16 would have been turned away from other bases if he had a fuel emergency??. :S

Not that long ago when a Hunter arrived at Waddington prior to the Airshow, taxied off the runway and flamed out due to fuel starvation. Many civ aircraft arrived at fuel minima, as Waddington provided fuel prior to departure. Civ pilots used to fill their aircraft 'up to the gunnels'. Lessons were learned in 2010, when the hot weather caused fuel expansion and venting. Top ups were then undertaken on the morning prior to departure.
