Hi All
Would anyone be able to tell me the comparative take off and landing distances for the A400M and C-130J please?
Thanks in advance.
Alan.
Did you know that registration to Fighter Control is completely free and brings you lots of added features? Find out more....
A400M v C-13OJ Field Performace.

Any particular reason for the (non)-comparison? They're in completely different weight and performance categories.
It also depends on whether you're comparing fairly ( same payload over same range from same strip and ISA conditions ) and even then it's not really equal because the A400M will cruise much faster and higher. As an example of what I mean, a Shorts 360 could beat a Twin Otter in STOL with any payload the latter can carry but burned much more fuel doing so. On the flip side it could carry twice the payload. So which was the "better" aeroplane? Depended on your dominant requirements.
Bear in mind that the A400M has some other tricks up its sleeve, like a much lower ground pressure. The SAAF found the C-130 unsuitable for Namibian / Angolan dirt strips on account of its ground pressure and troughing tandem-wheel arrangement.

It's certainly an interesting question if we were to consider the A400M being able to carry more cargo, fly higher and faster - and therefore able to make itself more "useful" to the order of battle. A quick web search shows they have similar (~3,200ft) take off distances which could suggest that an A-400M would be a more welcome visitor in a small landing strip. There might of course be artistic licence in those figures but let's give them the benefit of the doubt for now because like Turmo says, we still have to decide whether getting an A-400M instead of a C-130J is what the people on the ground want.

Thanks Turmo and Page Verify.
I was really thinking about whether the RAF or any other Air Force for that matter could do without C-130s.
