Warbird Super Cub - 51-15372 - big wheels

Post by Yammer » Fri Mar 17, 2017 5:33 pm

Warbird - Perhaps a Superduper Super Cub ! Seen at Shobdon summer 2016

Originally built in 1951 with serial 51-15372 this aircraft was delivered to the French Army. Now fitted with huge Bushmaster tyres an unusual sight in the UK and wearing a US Army colour scheme - Based at Crowfield in Suffolk.

It's in tip top nick.

Hi Steve :P

I love the shot

I am intrigued as to just why that wheel/tyre combo might have been fitted :S

Thanks for posting :thumb:

Hi Paddy - I *think* it's for soft field operations / farm strips - must add some drag though. Not uncommon in remote places like Alaska but unusual here. Maybe they're needed in Suffolk !

In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Used to be G-SCUB but was involved in a crash at it's home airfield

https://www.gov.uk/aaib-reports/piper-l ... tober-2007

Remains purchased from the insurance company and rebuilt to present standard - with the desirable features to survive any future misadventures with the local farming hazards.

Still based locally and a frequent flyer.
