Tamron 150-600mm Experiences?

Post by MRTT » Tue Dec 27, 2016 10:33 pm

What experiences have you had with this lens, received one for Christmas and was wondering what it's like?

Sorry no experience but in all honesty, if it was my present I'd have had it on the camera and been out testing it on anything and everything at different settings for the last couple of days!

Enjoy

Sadly, I've been busy over the past couple of days or as you said, I would've been out! Cheers! :)

Hi MRTT - I've had one for a few weeks now - traded in another lens towards this through WEX. Only had it out a few times - I'm a fair weather guy - but
happy with what it achieved at M'hall - focusing sharp which is always my main concern. Not been put through its paces really, and it sure is a heavy beast
- but no downside I'm aware of as yet. Hope this helps.

Good camera lens,

Used it at RIAT, Cad East, JW16-1 and found it a great lens for the price.
It needs a fair bit of good light to get the best out of it, and some arm muscles but it's been fine for me so far and I've had mine 18 or so months.
Cheers
Dave

Had mine for a couple of months and I'm well chuffed. Traded in my Canon 100-400 mk 1 for it.....and have to say i find the Tamron a tad sharper. Only thing that takes some getting used to is the zoom ring which i can't seem to perform the full range in one action. The push pull of the Canon was easier but apart from that the Tamron is better in my opinion

I would guess the tamron is similar to the Sigms, the sigma with the lens hood attached can be used like a push/pull which personally I prefer!

Just to add to what already been said, I think it's a great lens. Been using it for 18 months now mainly aircraft, but also wildlife. Here are a few comments that I've noticed:

* It's softest at 600mm (as you'd expect) but still very good and usable. If the lights a bit poor, hazy, dull etc then I avoid 600mm and zoom out a little and crop afterwards
* All the other focal lengths are excellent and the performance at 600mm is much better than other zooms I've used at the longest end.
* I mainly avoid shooting wide open and try f8 or f9. This isn't really a problem with the high ISO performance on modern DSLR's
* Unless I know a subject is really close I leave the focus limiter on, this really helps with the auto focus speed
* With my Nikon D7200 and a battery grip it's pretty heavy so I use a Black Rapid shoulder strap on to the tripod mount. That works well and I can carry it all day
* At 500-600mm technique for hand holding is really important regardless of shutter speed (to an extent)
* If your shooting aircraft on landing approaches and start at 600mm it's more than one turn of the zoom ring to get back to 150mm. It possible to do while following something towards you but needs practice. I try and rest my palm on the tripod mount and rotate the zoom ring with my finger tips!

Hope that helps.

I've had my Tamron for almost two years and although there are times when it freezes (It's a 3rd party lens, what did I expect) which is easily fixed by removing it and re-attaching to my body I really can't complain considering the cost versus anything Nikon has to offer.

It does start to get a bit heavy when I've been using it all day, but that's the price you pay given the reach it gives you...

Here's a link to a few of my shots taken with it https://www.flickr.com/photos/xxiiashii ... 3835831201
