Sigma 'bigma' 50-500mm lens canon fit

Post by mdobuk21 » Wed Dec 14, 2016 9:00 pm

Hi guys

Has anybody got or used a Bigma lens (sigma 50-500mm), I am after a new large lens as I only have a cheap sigma 70-300mm. I have been looking at a Bigma and a used canon 100-400mm as my budget is around £550, would be good to read your thoughts! Thanks

Mark

My first opinion would be

Canon 100 - 400mm or Sigma 150-500, because if I wanted to shoot 50mm I would use a smaller lens. Whereas the Canon and Sigma lens's I recommend excel all the way through their respective focal lengths. The 'Bigma' may well be a jack of all trades.

Both the lenses should fit your budget fairly easily.

Cheers

personally I would go the Canon route, I had a sigma 150-500 and it was naff unless shooting at f8 which isn't always possible. May have just had a dodgy lens of course!
The last time I saw an F22 at Lakenheath i DIDN'T photoshop it...

Further to Skips comments, I've got the Sigma and had no problems with it whatsoever.
Either way Canon or Sigma, but maybe not a' Bigma.'

Probably but I think the auto focus is on it's way out (grinding noise when focusing) hence the reason for looking for alternatives.

Unless you need the cash to PX your 70-300 I would suggest you keep it. There are many times when you will simply not need 500mm lens. Better to have a smaller lens in the bag, even consider a second body. Far easier to swap cameras than swap lenes.

Before you make the commitment of the Canon 100-400 (I think you refer to the Mk1 in your price range), take a look at the review for the performance at the top end of the range.
It is known that there was a fade to softness at the 400 end and a tendency to attract dust due to the sliding function in changing range - not for nothing was it known as 'The dust-pump'.
Notwithstanding, it remained/remains a hugely capable optic, but is now far surpassed by the Mk2 version.
As I say, it's still a tremendous optic.

I got the 50_500 sigma years ago about 2006 and it was very good, went to the canon 100_ 400 route and with so much that can go wrong with these lens mine seem to have them all. So went and got another sigma 50_500,
Still useing it no problems, the 100mm can be to long, on the 100_ 400, the 50mm end on the sigma is very handy, the sigma is sharper then the canon over 400mm.

If you could stretch your budget a bit, you could possibly get the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary lens. By far the best lens I've ever used. The weight isn't too bad for carrying around all day either.

Do you need a zoom?

I've got the Canon 100-400 L Mk 2 & it's fantastic, sharp as a tack, fast focus easy to use & bombproof.

One thing I'd consider with having such a big range is the size of the Bigma, do you really want to be lugging around such a large piece of glass all of the time ?

If the answer is yes then crack on, if not how about looking at the Canon 55-250mm lens (It's EF-S fit only) as it's fairly small, compact & gets some great reviews. Then invest the rest of the Money in a 100-400 or a Sigma 150-600 for when you need greater reach.

Or get a Canon 24-105 & the big lens to go with it should funds allow it.

How often in reality are you going to be having to use the whole 50-500mm range without the opportunity to switch ?

Of the two lens you're interested in, I would definitely opt for the Canon over the Sigma simply for the fact that it is an 'L' series lens and means higher quality optics. However the 100-400 mk.1 isn't without it's faults either. It's a well known fact that image sharpness tends to soften slightly at the top end (380mm upwards) and that previous users have had issues with the sliding zoom action eg; failing seals/dust induction.

I have used and still have the 50-500 sigma lens my personal view is that it's a good overall but it doesn't outstand in any particular area however it performed very well. If your shooting full frame I would forget it with my 5dmk3 it gave quite bad vignetting beyond about 200mm.

However on a crop frame camera I always grabbed it as my daily shooter even though I had more discrete and portable lenses
