5/6/94 50th D-Day event at Portsmouth...

Post by DAVEBRAD » Mon Dec 05, 2016 1:25 pm

hi,
just clearing some mk1 recording devices out, and I've got a note down for 5/6/94 at Portsmouth for the 50th D-Day commemoration event, I've noted 2 - VH-3D Presidential helIcopters heading out over the harbour and landing on the USS George Washington, Also noted on LPH-9 - Guam "4 Sea Stallions and 9 Chinooks" or the naval version of, anyone help out with these, they then sailed for Normandy. Lastly confirmation that 1603 was onboard the USCG cutter Dallas...

thanks and regards,
dave...

Hi Dave,

See http://www.hampshireairfields.co.uk/usassault.html for your CH-53s.

However, you have a problem with the CH46s - it lists 11 + 1 !!

Can't help on the Presidential VH-3s. See http://www.hampshireairfields.co.uk/uscarriers.html for the George Washington.

6513 was the HH-65 on the Dallas. 1603 was a HC-130H and would not have been on board!!

Cheers,

Bob.

Reagan went to France for the 50th anniversary of D-Day on 6th June, in a posse of 5 VH-3s and 4 H-53s. Does anyone know which ones they were? (seen from a grey ship in the Channel!)

Help wanted.
I need pictures of the SH-60B Seahawk on USS Normandy during this event.
The chopper carried nice nose and side artwork, D-Day stripes. This is for reference for a decal sheet.

Either you've got your President wrong (it was Clinton in 1994) or you're out by a decade - Reagan's visit was for the 40th anniversary in 1984; by 1994 his health was deteriorating due to the effects of Alzheimer's.

Ha, out by a decade (not for the first time! 🙄 - am I really that old?!)

I was referring to 1984, so the 40th anniversary.

'BAR' records three VH-3Ds (159353, 159354 and 159359) as having arrived at Mildenhall on 3/6, joined by 159352 on 4/6. All four flew to Lee-on-Solent on 4/6, arriving 'late pm'. On the afternoon of 5/6, two of them (unidentified) flew to Deauville as 'Nighthawk 31 & 32' accompanied by six CH-47Ds as 'Nighhawk 33-38'. The two VH-3Ds subsequently went to Paris for airlifting back to the US; the other two went to Brize Norton for airlifting.

Sorry I can't narrow it down more than the four.

OK, so for the 1984 trip 'BAR' makes referend to three VH-3Ds making the trip to Normandy on 6/6, they being 159358, 159359 and 159360. A fourth VH-53D, 159357, was at Northolt (with '59) on 4/6. The aforementioned trio were accompanied to Normandy by two CH-53Cs which may have been 10924 and 10928 of the 601st TCW. However, 'BAR' also makes clear that there was (still is?) a lack of absolute confirmation as to which VH-3Ds/CH-53Cs were used and when, so I'm afraid it's another case of 'to be confirmed'!

Can't help with any pics, but as you didn't identify the SH-60B in question it was 161204/HN-425 of HSL-42.

Can’t help with serials but on 5/6 there were two outside at Lee in the morning, before glider flypast (which included ZH129). Two VH-3 then landed on the sports field in Pompey at 13:40 but no idea If same two from Lee but may help piece together overall movements.
