Think this was probably an Alconbury TR-1A.
The last of Det.4's U-2R's (68-)10337 departed Mildenhall for the US on 22 Feb'83 and as a result all further U-2 transits were switched to route via Alconbury which had 2 TR-1A's on strength by the time of you're sighting.

thanks, I didn't know the dates and I put it as a U-2 as i'd written it down as such but the TR-1A's were at the back of my mind...thanks again for your trouble.
