Open Day set to see spectacular fast taxi runs by Cold War jets and a special flypast by the Lancaster Bomber!
An event which is totally unique to the county and which cannot be seen anywhere else in the world is taking place on Sunday 28 August. The Cold War Jets Open Day will once again feature a number of real star performers including the venerable Vickers VC10 and the Handley-Page Victor and English Electric Lightning all featuring in an event which is simply not to be missed!
One of the highlights of the show will undoubtedly will be a special flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster Bomber making her first appearance in the county this year.

During the event, which is a great day out for all of the family, there will also be spectacular ‘fast taxi’ runs by all of the other resident aircraft including the Nimrod, Comet, Lightning, Canberra, Buccaneer, Jet Provosts, L29 Delphin and Hunter. To add to the high levels of entertainment there will also be spectacular displays by a number of large scale model aircraft including the Vulcan, VC10 and Canberra.
The collection is made up of vintage heritage jet aircraft, all of which played a significant role in keeping the peace during the dangerous years of the ‘Cold War’, which ended over 25 years ago, and which are now maintained in a ‘live’ state and to a high standard by dedicated and hard working teams of volunteers.
Dave Walton, organiser of the event said;
“This is a great opportunity for the public to see what a totally unique event this is and to witness these spectacular aircraft being put through their paces and producing some amazing performances. Visitors will have the chance to experience, and in some cases relive, the unique, and spectacular, sights and sounds of our collection of aircraft, all of which have long retired from active service, but which helped to keep us all safe during the dangerous years of the Cold War – the War that thankfully was never fought.”
The home-based aircraft will carry out spectacular high speed runs throughout the day along the Airfield’s two mile long runway. There will also be the opportunity to view and experience cockpit tours of the other static aircraft in the collection, including the Tornado, Gnat, Super Guppy, Comet, Nimrod, Sea Vixen and Lightning. A wide range of souvenirs and memorabilia, including those of the Victor, Lightning Preservation Group and Vulcan to the Sky Club, will also be available in addition to hot and cold refreshments.
Another significant event which is happening at the show is the launch of a new aviation book called 'Contact' by Bob Tuxford, who fast taxies both the Victor and Nimrod. The book details Bob's fascinating career in the RAF as a Captain of the Victor tanker, before, during and after The Falklands Conflict in May 1982 when both the Victor being flown by Bob, and the Vulcan he was refuelling, came dangerously close to running out of fuel during the latter aircraft's famous bombing mission to the Islands - codenamed 'Black Buck One'. Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to purchase the book and meet Bob in person to talk about his experiences.

Cheers, Rog.
