Re: HMS Queen Elizabeth has a leak
One of the reasons why I no longer read a paper. Everything is expected to be perfect first time out. I expect that when an F.35 has a flat battery one day, that will be newsworthy too!. Ah well, it makes a change from the endless 'Celebs' news. By the way, can anyone clearly define just what a 'Celeb' is, and why are they soooooo interesting????

Always wondered why the term "celebrity" chef, all they are, are b.. .y cooks.
Why not celebrity drain cleaner or celebrity plumber.
I suppose if we didnt have celebs or people who think they mean something we wouldnt have celebrity get me out here dancing and singing, on ice (in a ballroom)
Oh well time for a bath

A tiny 5 Watt submersible electrical pump for a water feature in a garden can pump 400 litres per hour.
This mainstream media garbage is again proof of the 'fake' agenda most of them are pursuing in trying to keep falling sales and falling on-line hits from plummeting through the floor.

Re: HMS Queen Elizabeth has a leak
It's all bull **** - there are probably hundreds of snags in a new ship that size , probably always been the case but now everyone has a smart phone and an agenda
Most celebrities can't be found in Who's Who - instead they are in Who's What?

Re: HMS Queen Elizabeth has a leak
Less sensational but more likely what really happened.
I think the the vessel has two propellor shafts (perhaps 3 but I doubt that).
One shaft has a face seal which is allowing ingress of more water than expected. The other allows sea water into the vessel at a rate as designed. Each shaft would have an inflatable boot mounted outboard of the seal.
All face seals use outside sea water to lubricate the two faces of the seal.
The one that is shutdown exhibited excessive flow. From that, the seal design is ok, on one shaft something is causing the excessive flow.
Most likely the shaft is running outside the design parameters.
Divers were shown outside the hull. The shaft seal is mounted within the hull at the point where the shaft exits into the sea. It is more likely that the cause is related to propellor imbalance/A-bracket bearing fault/shaft vibration/shaft running out of true.
Since the first shaft driven vessel, water ingress has been a fact of life. Originally solved by packing a stuffing box with lignum vitea or similar which tightens against the shaft. Leaking sea water lubricated the two bearing surfaces, reducing the wear of both the wood and the metal shaft. periodically the wood would be replaced and after a longer period the shaft would be removed and skimmed.
More recently the shaft might have been fitted with a sleeve on the shaft on first build. This would allow maintenance of the wear area without removing the shaft.
From memory, the face seal was fitted to the early nuclear submarines, later to oil tankers. Probably most military vessels have this feature.
As stated above, the sea water is vented outboard by a pump. (Bilge?? ).
The tee-shirt wore out long ago.
Note to journalists. For a fee, a full article is available but it would not be sensational.

Re: HMS Queen Elizabeth has a leak
Very interesting but when will the first F-35s be embarked?
Re: HMS Queen Elizabeth has a leak
HMS QE goes to the USA early next year to start Flight deck ops training etc etc IIRC.
As for when the first Air Wing is ready, well 617 only arrives after formation in the summer of 2018.

Re: HMS Queen Elizabeth has a leak
Actually thinking back to the days when the currently only French aircraft carrier started sea trials, didn't it have to limp home after a propeller broke off.... It also had other issues..
And I believe the French have scrubbed plans to build a second carrier....

Will the ski equipped transporter be able to take off again from the ski jump?
Have a suffcient quantity of quality carrots been authorised by MoD, or will they have to us the austerity wonky ones available in cheaper supermarkets?
Does the transport air vehicle come equipped with a hook - oops, there's an oversight.
Will be reindeer catch their antlers in the barrier in the case of a emergency on landing?

Re: HMS Queen Elizabeth has a leak
The MOD has requested The QE be stood down from this task. Realised the trade had not practiced vertical landings because couldn't do it anyway.
USA will now undertake with a Nimitz class real aircraft carrier that actualy has aircraft on it. These will provide guidance and air cover.
