Diesel prices in the UK

Post by Mike » Fri Aug 01, 2014 5:34 pm

Have just done a trip down to Bomber County and Manchester, I filled the car up before leaving Inverness and paid 131.9p per litre.

Haven't seen anywhere on my travels to match that price, the BP station at the Trafford Centre charges 151.9 per litre. There seems to be a huge difference in prices.

Does anyone know why and what do you guys pay?

129.7 at Asda, or 130.9 less 10p/litre if you've spent £60 in the Sainsbury store.

Also 128.9 twice a week at various Norfolk garages, less a further 4p/litre with a newspaper coupon.

Normally use Morrisons (currently around £1.30) if it's personal or work with tax relief, other than that it's a Company car with a fuel card, so don't really mind the price... :D

Mike,
Should have asked but im sure you didnt know i had been doon there 3 times already this year!

I always plan for stopping at Tescos and usually top up at Carlisle which is usually same price as here in Dundee. That then gives me a enough range to get down to my other regular haunts at Newmarket, Bicester and Cirencester. Only used a big name petrol station once in about 9 years!

BTW, was that Trafford station really charging over £7 a gallon!!! :O EDIT - £6.91 a gallon! Daylight Robbery!

Shell 1.36 (V-Power Diesel) in Hemel Hempstead. It's 2.3rds of a mile away from Buncefield hence the price, only fill up at Shell for the points and V-Power Diesel :)

It sure was, I stopped there to buy a Subway and a couple of bottles of water which were actually quite cheap, I certainly wasn't going to pay that silly price for fuel ! Luckily I can get around 850 miles out of a tank, so I only needed to buy enough on the M6 to get home - at £1.439 a litre.

The one thing I don't get is the difference in prices between the same supermarket chains!
Diesel here (Winsford, Cheshire) at Morrisons is £1.35.9 and has been for months now, in Netherfield (Nottingham) it's £132.9 and just 12 miles up the road near Warrington it's £1.30.9 !! Now how does that work? especially when our local stores supply comes from exactly the same place near Ellesmere Port ! (I know that 'cause a mate of mine does their deliveries round this area!)

Sainsbury computer is coughing again - with your token, buy £15 of household cleaning stuff (washing powders, sprays, jollop etc.), get 14p off per litre.

So, you buy required amount that is already on offer to get the discount voucher, then put say 60 litres in car.

End result, depending on which way you want to look at it, is either £8.40 off the fuel - or you only paid £6.60 for a garage full of soap powder.

Put 60 litres in today @ £1.289 less 14p/litre = £1.149/litre - and I've still got a garage full of soap powder.

Put 62 litres in today @ £1.289 less 4p/litre - coupon from local paper - = £1.249/litre.

Another £2.48 saved.

£1.289 at ASDA Inverness today too, 20 pounds-worth lasts me a whole month - that's 20+ return visits to work and about 6 visits to the supermarket a month plus other stuff too.

It's absolutely crazy that if I have a jaunt South that the cheapest fuel I can find is in the heart of the Highlands of Scotland even before I've left !!

OK, there's loads of ASDAs and Tescos in England, but they're not the easiest of things to find when you're driving on the M6/ M1/ M25, etc., etc.
The filling-stations on motorways charge what they like and they get away with it, it's about time that there was something done about them - they're all charging between 10-20p a litre more than any supermarket in the UK.

Mr. Fed-up with being ripped-off when he goes anywhere, Inverness.
