Joint Warrior 141

Post by 10w » Sun Mar 23, 2014 1:17 pm

More details in the Exercises Forum but Kinloss should be getting some visitors during this exercise.

It is expected that parachute troops and large rotary wing air brigade formations will start to arrive to attack Kinloss Barracks, possibly from 7th April onwards until 11th April. Fast jet airfield attacks and close air support will also be taking place.

There may be some activity prior to this by the 'enemy' forces including paradropping on the 3rd and 4th April.

Edingham is scheduled I'm told but no set days or times. Unusal as it's not technically an MOD area anymore and is privately owned by a farmer. However I found out specials use it quite often so you never know, plus it's close to the Kirkcudbright training range where there is currently a few RAF reg, Marines and Para's. ;)

Air Assault reported in local press to take place at Kinloss Monday 7th.

Troops will initially land in Chinook,Merlin and Puma helicopters, protected by Apache attack helicopters.
Once airfield is secured C-130 Hercules a/c to take in more troops and equipment.

Do not know any times as yet . :)

'Enemy' troops are due for paradrop insertion tomorrow (4th). Only a general time frame of 0700-2300 at the moment I am afraid.

Just had a thought, with an Army unit now based at Kinloss, maybe we'll see some more of these assaults at Kinloss, as there is a pretty sizeable defending force available.

I highly doubt it. The herc's use of Kinloss has been given special authority. Although it has been good to see these aircraft at Kinloss again, for our controllers it's been a treat.

It should have been three Apaches, but one of them made an emergency landing in a field just outside Aberdeen on Monday morning while transiting to Kinloss. It's being guarded while plans are made for an engine change later this week - looks like it may be in the field until Thursday/Friday. Crew were uninjured in the landing.

All as quiet as a mouse this morning. Appears to be nothing left here, albeit RAF security are still doing the security checks around the perimeter.

Listed below are the serials of the attack force on the 7th, gleaned from my photos.
The time given is from the photo that I could first identify the serial, and is GMT.
ZJ124 H 11:49, ZJ121 E 11:49, ZJ119 C 11:50, ZJ990 AA 11:50, ZJ992 AB 11:52,
(the black Puma) P 11:53, ZA936 11:55, ZA714 11:55, B-537 12:01, ZH874 12:12,
ZG920 12:25, ZG886 12:25.
Later there were ZG884 15:29, and ZJ957 15:30. I suspect the latter was in the initial
attack force, but have no proof. Thanks to all who gave info and advice, and if anyone
can give the identity of the black Puma, it would be much appreciated.

Hope this is of use,
Mike.

Hi Mike, Thanks for your update on the 7th "assault". The black Puma P was ZJ955 and ZJ957 was also in the initial attack.
Regards
Angus
