As far as we know CQWI is going ahead at Kinloss w.c 04-07 no info as to what is participating.

EXERCISE CQWI - 10 JUL - 21 JUL 11
This is a large scale exercise taking place across Scotland and Northern England. There will be mixed formation of about 30 aircraft participating in this Combined Qualified Weapons Instructor Course.

One final trip to Kinloss then. Hope there is some decent weather for it.

Hi Les, there seems to be a bit of confusion about this as some other sites (including Scramble) have it starting on Sunday(!) 10/7 and finishing on Thursday 21/7 and involves only 30 aircraft - whatever happens there'll be 20 less Harriers than last year.

Well if the '30 aircraft' are to be believed, let's start some speculation.....

There could be up to 5 x Falcons and a random number of Hawks - up to 10, a Nimrod - oh.... scratch that, an AWACs, a couple of Hercs and then the actual participants.... So I make that a minimum of 14 ancilliary aircraft leaving up to 16 'attack' aircraft. No Harriers or F-3s - that just leaves Typhoons and we know they are very busy elsewhere so I'm betting my money on some foreign participants. Now the real speculation begins.....

6 Sqn down the road have plenty of new Typhoons, my bet is that they will be up to play. As for Tornado,s I can only think 12 Sqn would be available and they would operate out of Lossiemouth. After that its anybodies guess, mind you there are a couple of good rumours going around, re foreign stuff.

dont forget a CQWI is designed specifically for the RAF, foreign forces are usually employed to play "bad guys"

I suspect it will be cancelled very late in the day though, because the RAF hardly need any training as they a doing it for real in two theatres of operations.

What's the point in a rumour if you aren't going to spread it

It's "Combined Qualified Weapons Instructors" course, so any current involvement that the RAF find themselves in wouldn't alter the exercise purpose, however shortage of airframes, airframe hours being used up, shortage of crews and more importantly money being tight will mean that savings have to made in order to keep up operational commitments, which could see the exercise cancelled. So what foreigners are being talked about ?

personally i think the exercise will still go ahead but just a lot smaller key to what it used to be like.I would go on a number of hawks making most of the aircraft there and a selection of typhoons from 6sqn participating.The gr4s may particiapte from lossiemouth but youre guess is as good as mine!Busy exercises and detachments seem to be a thing of the past now guys!

There is an article in the latest Forres Gazette. Doesn't add much to what's been posted though they mention a Shadow. Looks like the Typhoons will be flying from Leuchars - along with Tutors !!!! (Off-topic also has a picture of a certain well-known local character who appears quite good at golf (didn't get an invitation to Castle Stewart though)

ZZ418 is the Shadow, there was also two 100 Sqn Hawks, but due to heat haze they were unreadable Not sure when they (the Hawks) arrived

Four additions this morning. An Army Lynx (cut short so no id), C17 ZZ177 with Red tail Falcon 20 G-FRAJ and C130K XV214
Not long after the C130 landed, the tower was closing, so hopefully a bit movements tomorrow

i can confirm that the c-17 left kinloss at approx 2pm this afternoon

can anyone confirm the serials of the hawks, i think there was 9 at that time and also the c-130 that did 2 touch and go's at the same time.

Another 7 Hawks arrived this morning and 2 Falcon 20s. The C17 took off as Nestegg and returned about 1510L. While at Lossie later the C17 departed as Ascot 879 (the c/s it came in using) so may have departed back to Brize

The C130J that did a couple of t&gs before landing was ZH873, it later departed also.
The Hawk serials are XX280/CM,XX318/CN,XX202/CF,XX346/CH (100 Sqn marks)
XX188,XX199 (208 Sqn marks)
XX287,XX158,XX317,XX204 (19 Sqn marks)

So am I missing something, or are there no fast jets up at Kinloss for this? I was hoping to go up for one last photo trip to Kinloss, but I don't see anything there so far to make the trip worthwhile.

I think there were 23 different Harriers last year with about 10 Coningsby Typhoons, 41 sqn Tonkas, Belgian F-16s and Lakenheath F-15s. It looks like all of the Tonkas are operating from Lossie and the Typhoons from Leuchars for this. Very disappointing but that's the way things are now.
