Interesting Colin. Had a 'chat' with one of the folk at Leuchars when SF were on exercise last year. Just wanted to know how long I was staying at end of runway and that there would be 'no flying until 1am'. Quite helpful actually as it was freezing! Swift return to Tayport. Mind you I did not have a camera with me. It would certainly have been very easy to take photos of them in Tayport Harbour where they kept their fast ribs .. Totally public.
Must pop down for a look

Common request during SF exercises is not to take photos of personnel or at least not their faces which seems fair enough.

Not sure from a strictly legal standpoint how 'No photography' could be enforced though.

I was in Leuchars a few years ago as part of the Aviation groups visit during a major exercise.Loads of fast jets (including the Americans nice new shiny F/A 18 Hornets.)Only restriction was a REQUEST not to take pictures of the American pilots as they were about to deploy to a war zone.Even got on some of the crew ladders for a look in the cockpits.Great day..

Must say I wouldn't say I'm one for taking pictures of people anyway just Aircraft and other Vehicles such as Motor Cars (after asking permission) etc, The only people I take pics of are my Family and (again after asking permission of course) Friends.

Also gotta say this is one of the reasons since the RAF left that I have not gone near Leuchars after hearing stories about people outside other barracks being told to "go away" the other being that I'm an Aircraft Enthusiast not an Army Enthusiast(apart from Army Helicopters and Aircraft).

This is just out of curiosity, has anyone tried to get a picture of the Tornado F.3 at The Main Gate since the Army moved in?(Got my pictures of it at Airshows 2011 and 2012)...............

Signs.

Had a pop down to look at the wording on the signs. Easy way to do this would be to pop up a photo of sign....ermmm :grr:

So, there are two different types of sign now on fence repeated at intervals..

Sign 1. Black on white background
MOD Property
This is a prohibited place
Within the meaning of
The
Official Secrets Acts
Unauthorised persons
Entering the area may be
Arrested and prosecuted

Sign 2. White on red background
MOD
Private
Property
Authorised Access Only
Photography
Is strictly forbidden

Hi

Dont know why everybody is getting excited about these signs ?
theres nothing to photograph apart from tutors or the odd overshoot if ure lucky to catch one
and yes we do get 1 or 2 detachments a year but not much.

you have to rember now its an army base now not raf leuchars as we all new it
so the army can put up as much signs as they like?

Hi Allan,

Not getting excited but can't agree nothing to photo. Leuchars still getting visits from Typhoons to keep the on base RAF folk on their toes, occasional diverts, Atlas has been there a few times as are the odd Herc. Helicopters are fairly frequent and of course it is strongly rumored that QRA is coming to Leuchars when the runway work getting done at Lossie.
Must admit that you have to be lucky to catch things but Friday mornings there are frequently Typhoon overshoots, touch and goes on occassion and similarly F15 s. So not entirely hopeless but if you enjoy taking photos...

It would be very disappointing if QRA does come back for a short while and we are not even allowed to stand at fence...

Never had a problem in over a decade of photographing landings & take offs, If not allowed at the fence then just have to move a bit further away, still possible to get pics from the lay-by past Guardbridge or by the Station (Lcs)

Surely these signs apply to the "Private Property", therefore it shouldn't apply to taking photographs outwith this on public ground. The same as parking outside.
