Next Typhoon Squadron for Lossie

Post by vulcanxl425 » Sat Jul 14, 2018 2:28 pm

Announced at RIAT earlier and ending speculation as to which Squadron would form at Lossie .It has been released that No.9 Squadron who currently fly the Tornado will reform later this year operating with the Typhoon.
Some people were expecting one of the Coningsby units to switch here , others for the resurrection of that famous fighter Squadron No.43 who bowed out at Leuchars.
Looking forward to No 9 or IX(B) when they start to operate out of Lossiemouth. Hope that their aircraft will be marked up with Squadron markings ( Flying Bat). Call-signs used in past include "Batman and Tirpitz".

Will their area at Lossie be known as Gotham City like it was at Marham? Wonder if they have a BatPhoon?

So, where exactly at Lossie is IX(B) Sqn actually going to be located? Let the speculation begin ;)

I would hazard a guess at the Northern HAS site but probably initially from the old XV line until the HAS site is refurbished.

That'll be No2 Hangar, I thought that was some kind of Typhoon maintenance facility?

So did I but that was what was briefed to some personnel during the week.

Also briefed was that runways will be resurfaced up to but not including the intersection so that one will always remain open. Q will then decamp to Leuchars for 6 weeks while the intersection is done

All 2nd line Typhoon maintenance is carried out at Coningsby. 2 Hangar will accommodate the next squadron, although I always thought it made sense to have the T1 squadron on the QRA site. Probably too expensive to refurbish an entire HAS site.
