F & F Day 5/8/17

Post by Andypandy » Thu Jul 27, 2017 6:30 pm

I saw the poster recently, not much flying. Typhoon display plus a 3 ship flypast, an Anson, Coast Guard helicopter and that was pretty much it. The F & F day website shows the Typhoon display plus a flypast to represent the active SQN's. Hopefully we get some passing trade. Looks like all the rest will be at Newcastle on that day. Still if the weather is nice it might be a nice day out in the sunshine, I live in hope.
Any updates would be welcome

Might refer to the Reds being at Newcastle, County Down on the same day?

Looks like the Fun Police are clamping down on outsiders watching the Families Day flying within the Typhoon a/c display area which appears to rule out anywhere near the airfield . A notice appears in the RAF Lossiemouth FB page .
Maybe this is standard practice but I don't recall seeing similar notices .

Basically anywhere that the spotters currently use, will be out of bounds by the sounds of it. Can't see how they can shut a road though, and what happens if your house falls within the area? Seems a lot of inconvenience to the locals just so the few can enjoy their day.

A lot of unhappy people on the InsideMoray Facebook page or given the depth of feeling being expressed that page should be renamed outsideMoray.

Not sure. The core of the release is:
In line with Civil Aviation Authority advice to minimise 3rd parties within the display area during the display, the following roads will be closed between 2.45pm and 3.30pm: B9135, Drainie Road, Covesea Road, and the unnamed road between Drainie Road and the B9040. There will also be temporary traffic restriction orders on these roads, and the B9040, between 6am and 5pm.

The area enclosed by these roads will be within the designated Typhoon display area and it is recommended by the Civil Aviation Authority that members of the public do not watch flying displays from within a designated display area. Police Scotland & RAF Police notices will be in place in areas where members of the public are not to congregate; doing so may result in the cancellation of the flying display.
If I'm reading that correctly, all roads around the base will be shut for 45 minutes during the displays and the entire area enclosed within those roads will be considered part of the display area. As the golf course would seem to be included in that area, perhaps they have arranged for that to be cleared during that time period? I'm not sure where Police Scotland/RAF notices will appear, but given how packed the 23 end was last year for the Friends & Family Day I'd imagine there will be notices there and a heightened police presence, and there's probably a fair chance of people being asked to move on.

When I read the post on the RAF Lossiemouth Facebook page this morning, I did wonder if it was in response to the turnout last year. The track up to the parking area at 23 was packed, and the raised areas on the way along the track were filled with vehicles and spectators - perhaps someone on base got nervous about a repeat this year and decided a more heavy-handed approach was safest?

Valid comment. Any idea where anyone could park/stand without being a problem and closer than say Elgin? ;)

Of course not - The Moray Open is on......

Just to clarify - signs have been erected notifying prohibition of waiting from the Duffus junction (Covesea Road) and the junction of the Gordonstoun Road where it joins the coast road between 10am and 5pm on the day. Also the roads will be CLOSED between 2:45 and 3:15 'for a short time'.

We have no idea at the moment whether cars will be allowed along the usual 23 track but I suspect anybody trying to sneak down the old dispersals might be in for a shock.

Not a great day for enthusiasts and locals who can't get on base!

Well looking at the forecast, it looks like it will. Pish poor attitude shutting public roads.

In fairness it's not the RAF's fault . The Shoreham disaster has made life very awkward for the airshow scene . The CAA have brought in guidelines and the organisers have to consider their liability should anything go wrong . Elf n' Safety gone mad but that's the way it is.

Agree totally but....

While I think this is totally unfair and to say the least a bit OTT if you look at it from their point of view it us not so hard to see why. We live in a world where people and organisations are sued at the drop of a hat whether any real blame or not. I work as a teacher of primary kids ( Pupil Support Teacher -ASN) and I am afraid a great deal of time is used unproductively avoiding just such actions. It drives me nuts but I have to make sure I have crossed the Ts and dotted the Is just in case.

If, and of course it us a pretty big if, anything did go wrong and something fell off an aircraft and injured somebody, or god forbid a really nasty outcome, the lawyers would be circling. If they did not follow CAA guidelines to the letter (and probably past that to be safe) and a serious incident took place not only would folk lose jobs and possibly pensions but you coukd very well find yourself facing manslaughter charges. It is a very sad fact of the modern life we have allowed our politicians to create.

Please don't think I support this sort of stuff as I don't in any shape or form but I think if we consider it we can understand why.

Could be worse, they have made sure I am safe every Friday by stealing my Typhoons!

I hope any of you that go manage to find somewhere reasonable.

Chris

It's a bit much though, just shutting public roads so they can bore a few holes in the sky. This isn't an airshow either, it's a private event, using publicly owned equipment for their own private use.

Agreed , shutting the roads is a bit much . It's a small air display which, private or not , attracts attention from aviation enthusiasts and the general public and has resulted in past years , in large crowds gathered at various vantage points just as with any public airshow so I reckon the legal beagles would be all over them if something happened .
