More investment in Lossie

Post by davidn » Sat Feb 25, 2017 10:57 am

Nothing we don't already know, but there are articles in the local press and the BBC re: Lossie and a £400 million investment (and Leuchars as the main army base)

http://www.insidemoray.com/defence-chie ... -in-moray/

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-39076536

Typically tho':

The Scottish government said it was "too little, too late".

last year, SNP MP Angus Robertson shouted from the rooftops that he had an 'impeccable source' declaring that Kinloss was closing.....

The work at Lossiemouth was confirmed as part of a £1.7billion Scotland-wide funding package that will also see further work being undertaken at Kinloss Barracks – just months after local MP Angus Robertson sparked fears over its closure.Mr Robertson had insisted Kinloss was being lined up for closure – however, it emerged that the base was only looked at as part of a wider review of the defence estate in the UK, and was never under any serious threat.

Last night Mr Robertson welcomed the investment in Lossiemouth, acknowledging the boost it would bring to the Moray economy: “It demonstrates the strategic importance of the base which was a point very strongly argued during the fight to save RAF Lossiemouth from closure.

“With the new infrastructure being built it means important work in the area – that, in turn, supports the wider Moray economy. In addition, the increasing military and civilian jobs on the base are very important to Moray and will help to sustain many local businesses.”

And yet there is a perfectly good base just along the road that could be used.

Not directly linked to the above, but following the P8 Deal last year there was a statement from David Cameron & Boeing regarding investment in Lossiemouth. The following extract was reported by 'Inside Moray' ...
"Mr Cameron used the start of the Farnborough Air Show to unveil details of the nine Boeing P8-A MPA’s that will be based at RAF Lossiemouth.
In the deal there will also be a significant expansion of the research operations by Boeing, who will invest around £100million in an operational and training base at Lossiemouth that will create around 100 new jobs in the area."

Would I be correct in assuming that this information remains unaffected by Boeing plans to develop a 'Centre of Excellence' at Boscombe Down? I have seen the viewtopic.php?f=287&t=141835 which is also full of hypothesis too. I note the 'Defence' word & I'm personally not too excited about a heap of Civvies coming to BD. for an 'oil-change', so let me throw this into the mix. Boeing say they're building & maintaining the new AAC AH64E  much to the disgust of Leonardo! ( Damn whingeing Turtles?) That's still not 1500 jobs, sooo let's start a new rumour....Boscombe Down will be responsible for servicing all P8 aircraft from the RAF, Norway & as yet unknown future European operators, together with all other Boeing fixed-wing military assets this side of the 'Pond' & half-way to the USA Eastwards.
That'll fill 1500 jobs & I'll fill my boots too!! :)

would be no surprise if Boeing opted for another location due to uncertainty over indyref2. Why invest 100 million in a base that will possibly become a ghost town if the SNP were to win.
I notice the new housing being built opposite the camp gates seems to be on hold as well, coincidence?

Why would that happen?

I don't think so. It's a tactic commonly employed by developers and depends on many factors, the main ones being market forces and the retention of existing planning consent for roads/services whilst amended plans are considered for an increase in housing numbers (and therefore profits). Also developer contributions (e.g. the building of local services/provision of specialist housing within the site etc.) are constantly under negotiation and therefore a hindrance to full consent being issued. Building Warrant (and alterations to) may also be holding development up.
