According to this
http://www.globalaviationresource.com/v ... -flies-on/
the move to Marham has been cancelled and XV(R) will remain at Lossiemouth until disbanding around September 2017.

That article dates to March 2015. The current "rumour" is that the Tornados will be away by December 2016. This is to allow the massive works associated with RAF P.8 operations to start.

That'd be a great shame to see them away so early. I'd hoped to see them here for a while yet, and for at least one more opportunity for an enthusiasts day to see them up-close. If they are to leave by the end of the year, that leaves JW16-2 as the only likely chance of a base visit...

Apparently the RSAF Tornadoes pulled out about a month ago, effectively scrubbing the whole exercise.
It don't mean a thing if the wings don't swing!!

Word is there's some new MPA type aircraft coming to Lossie. I'm guessing there needs to be a different infrastructure for those machines and with the current RTP rates for the Tornado, it would make sense to have them all in one place.

Just rumours though.

Hi Regarding the tornados departing in December, according to a newly posted in pilot at 23 end spotters area he stated that he had started the final course of converting on to the Tornado

Thanks for the info. If I remember correctly, the OCU phase is something like 30 weeks. Depending on how far into that he is, December 2016 - or not long after - for the end of Tornado operations at Lossie sounds about right.

that leaves JW16-2 as the only likely chance of a base visit...

I emailed Lossie Media/Comms back in May to ask if there were any plans for an enthusiasts day later in 2016, perhaps to coincide with JW16-2, and was told:
RAF Lossiemouth squadrons and personnel are supporting operations worldwide at the moment and therefore we did not have an Enthusiasts Day during the last iteration of the Exercise. A decision has not been made at this time as to whether we will hold an Enthusiasts Day during the Exercise in October. When a decision has been made it will be advertised on our website and Facebook page.
I'm not as familiar with the setup and base activities as regulars, but I'd imagine JW16-2 would be the only suitable time between now and the departure of the Tornados (assuming they are away in late 2016) for an enthusiasts day to be held, and that only if (as above) it can be fitted around ongoing operations. I haven't pestered them since, as their reply was pretty clear - nothing to announce, and it will be advertised if anything is to go ahead.

The August\September edition of the base newsletter states that the last long course started in June 2016 and XV(R) is due to disband in the Spring of 2017.

It does also state that 1(F) will be taking part in Green Flag and we all know that this has been cancelled.

A XV(R) pilot informed me that the last course finishes in February '17 and the squadron disbands in April '17. Just another reason to head north for JW 16-2.
