RJX Gone From Woodford... What Next? 603?

Post by Woodford » Mon Jun 13, 2011 3:41 pm

Hi guys

RJX has gone from BAE Woodford now, it was dismantled and lifted last tuesday by low loader :( Such a shame. The hangars are completely empty now too. BAE won't let anyone near XM603 at all now, leads me to think that it's days are numbered. I cant believe this site is closing, only 5 years ago it was filled with Nimrods, there were regular test flights, only a few years before the 146's were in production and now nothing. Shame...

Those memories sound awesome! My first airshow was Woodford in 1995. I remember playing out on a few occasions during the late 90's/early 00's and seeing the odd aircraft in and around woodford in the distance.

I doubt Woodford would have a final flypast due to the embarassment of its closure/Nimrod scrapping, they want as little media coverage as possible. My guess is that Woodford will bow out silently :(

I still remember the Vulcans flying over my school for tanker conversion, and when the Buccaneers were coming in for upgrades. And how exciting it was on those rare occasions a Shackleton or Victor paid a visit! And standing at the end of the runway by the brook when soemthing landed before the 'blue b*st*rd' chased us off in his Land Rover!
Part of me will die with that airfield.

I did mention XM603 to Bruntingthorpe in the hope someone from there could save her, but I haven't heard much other than the Canberra guy who replie don here said he'd forward my post to 'the powers that be' there.

Do you know if Woodford is going to have a final flypast or anything? Surely XH558 and a Nimrod R.1 could do a couple of low overshoots? Or like so much these days, is the airfield that produced the Lancaster & Vulcan just going to go with barely a whimper?
gone are the days of bunking off an a friday and a monday of the airshow and holding onto the yellow beacon when the red arrows took off praying you were'n't gonna land in the brook :-) blue b*st*rd LOL good memory

Crying shame that at least part XM603 can not be saved for the Manchester Science and Industry Museum. Ok I understand they lack the space for the whole aircraftt and the cost to dismantle and move would be huge. But surely the nose, fuselage / bomb bay and vertical tail are could be relocated and placed on display. It would make a stunning exhibit with wings removed. Not ideal but better than just 'pots an' pans'

Yep. If they cut her up cleanly could use her as a walk through exhibit. With the heading "We used to be able to build these despite being just as skint as we are now. What the hell is going on?"

There's very little left in XM603, it was gutted to keep XH558 flying, even though XM603 was, at one point, still fully airworthy!

XM603 is "unsafe" and cannot be moved, so will have to be broken up in place.

Hi,
Does anyone have any Woodford airshow programmes they'd want to sell?

I did start a campaign to have one more airshow at Woodford before the site closed to celebrate the history of the place. It gathered a lot of pace but In the end BAe themselves weren't interested at all. Typical.

Cheers
Tom

Hello,

Does anyone know what happened to G-ORJX after it disappeared on a low loader.
