LOG: RAF Church Fenton 22 November 2012

Post by stevep22 » Thu Nov 22, 2012 4:23 pm

Well, a non-log really. Had a run across to Elvington this morning and returned via the CF viewing area at about noon. The only aircraft to be seen was Grob G-BYXG. Saw it do a couple of circuits but the wind was quite gusty and after it landed it was hangared almost immediately. No other a/c were out and the only other thing seen was an unidentified red and white a/c the tail of which was seen when they opened the hangar doors briefly.

That's your lot!

Not sure if its still there but there was a Red and White Yak 52 I've seen in the hangar a few times. One of the VT guys mentioned it was a private job.
Cheers

Yes, I'd agree with Jamie, Yak 52 in hangar one. (There's a privately owned Chipmunk, T-6 and a pair of JPs in hangar 3 too.) RAF Church Fenton has been eerily quiet of late - happily the sun is out today and a number of movements have taken place, Tutors and Tucanos.

Not knowing the numbering, is Hangar 1 the one furthest left as you look across from the viewing area at the far side of the airfield?

Yes Steve, that's the one - they used to be numbered but, despite living a matter of metres away from them, I can't remember if they still are!

Another quiet day today despite a promising start...

As Stuart says, it was out today, it was a good sight to see. Also saw the Grobs as well.

Yes, that rumour has been circulating for about a year now - to be honest the airfield is so quiet during the week it probably makes sound sense. Quite busy at the weekend, presumably with the AEF. I spoke to someone at the airfield earlier this year and they suggested Topcliffe to be the favoured RLG for Linton adding that the facilities are not as good as Fenton's but it was more financially attractive which no doubt appeals to the bean counters.
The future of RAF Church Fenton is probably worthy of a thread of its own as there are so many rumours flying around at present as to the likely post-service use. Interestingly a man in a demolition truck asked me for directions to the airfield this week...

Well We have been seeing an Increase in Aircraft movements over at Linton and It is probably due to the rumour being true. And yes the main operating day for the AEF is Sunday for ATC Cadets only. Saturday is usually movements for Yorkshire UAS to Train.

I've been told by someone on base that the university squadron are to move to Linton on Ouse, when they don't know yet With Church Fenton to shut after. But to be fair there has been rumours going round for the last couple of years and its still open. There's even talk of them building hundreds of houses on camp, not that Fenton need anymore houses built.
