E-3 just departed

Post by rj.mad » Fri Apr 10, 2015 6:47 pm

Just had the remaining E-3 at waddo depart in beautiful evening sun. Not sure of call sign as i couldnt get to the radio but im assuming it would have been on a NATO callsign. Any ideas if this one is joining the rest at coningsby?

Many thanks

It looked like ZH104 not ZH106 to me

Yes rh226 it is. I spotted the departure shortly after it went out and it didn't look like 106

I saw it depart, just as I got back home, looked like the special tail, turned left sharply to head in coningsby direction.

If it wasn't the special, where is the special?

It was ZH104 as per what is posted on Milkys Coningsby page.

as for ZH106 I assume it was towed back inside.

Had a E3-D land at waddington about an hour ago. Showed on donny radar as ZH101 and sounded like one took off again about 5 minutes ago but this is showing on donny radar as ZH106. Can anyone confirm these.

Many thanks

ZH101 departed Coningsby as NATO 32 to Waddington.

Thats what i thought. Could have sworn another one took off aboutvan hour later. The only one that was showing on donny radar was ZH106 but it was using a boscombe down call sign!! Vey strange

Not really, 106 was probably still completing the trials flights that were abruptly halted due to the engine issue shortly after it had transited to Coningsby following its extensive mod programme. There were several sorties planned around the availability of a BDN test crew which then got canned when the jet broke. Those sorties were mandatory to clear the mods and to allow the update of the other jets in the fleet - 106's issue would have delayed the start of the next jet's mods as there's no point commencing work on something that hasn't been signed off.
