PDA 2018 Info and Up dates.

Post by reaper493 » Wed Apr 04, 2018 2:00 pm

Afternoon all,

I have no info on this yet, but have started a new thread as last years was resurrected and confusing many....

BBMF have begun display work up this week, with multiple practice times NOTAM'd.

Typhoon has obviously been practicing for much longer.

Please post any questions or info you have in this new thread, I'm sure people will add to this once they find anything out.

Cheers

Mike

I think the first and most important point that should be made regarding the PDA for 2018 is that this is NOT an airshow or public event.

I imagine there will be road closures and there will be police moving people on from regular spots that enthusiasts might ordinarily want to watch a display from.

It is really important that members appreciate the fact that this is not an event they are invited to by the RAF and should remember to be respectful to the local landowners and whatever measures the RAF and/or police put in place to make sure that the crews can successfully pass their PDA.

I was talking with the staff at the IBCC yesterday. Next Thursday (12th) marks the official opening ceremony with veterans coming from across the world, over 50 are coming from Australia alone.

There is due to be a flypast as part of the ceremony and they are hoping for it to be the BBMF Lancaster. It would, so I was told, need a PDA by then to perform the flypast, so there could be PDA's as early as next week.

Before anyone tries to get near the IBCC next week, it is closed to public all week and the event on 12th is by ticket only.

If it's just one or two flypasts it shouldn't need a PDA.

I'm somewhat puzzled by this.

As it happens I'm staying in Coningsby the week where the PDA days look to happen BUT the choice of week had nothing to do with the PDA displays.

Given the weeks the pilot spends practising his routine in the run up to the PDA day, why are people so excited to see the actual PDA flight? Isnt what does exactly the same as he's been doing for weeks?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hard to say, it all depends on what roads are open.

In experience of previous years, the 11sqd HAS site is the best viewing spot (old Fen lane) , but this is directly under the display area, so may well be closed off on the day.
Reedham lane and the mound can also be quite good as well. If these are shut, id go to Crash gate one, past the main gate, which is where the public would be if this was a display.

It varies each year depending on the display, i haven't managed to get down this year, so can't speak from my personal experience this time round!

If i was going, id go old fen lane (not all the way to the end!!) near some farm buildings on the right. with the base in front of you.

Cheers

Mike

I guess because you get to see at least 2 Typhoon displays in quick succession.

BBMF PDA days are normally the most popular, because you normally have the following:

Lanc plus two fighters
Two fighters
Single fighters

Plus this year there is Lanc, Dak and two fighters ‘trenchard’ display.

Each pilot has to be authorised, and with I think 3 lanc captains (also able to fly the Dak) and at least 1 Dak captain, plus the number of fighter pilots (at least 4 off the top of my head) the amount of displays and crews needing to be authorised is massive.

This is just Typhoon, 1hr 15 doesnt give enough time to do both.

BBMF aren't ready yet, would presume the following week or two.

Tuesday is primary day, Wednesday is reserve.

Yea I've just seen.

I've taken my information from the pilots twitter feeds.

Typhoon pilot tweeted something along the lines of 'next Friday you should hopefully have a qualified display pilot ' at the end of last week.

Tim Dunlop, Lancaster captain tweeted to the RNHF, who had just completed PDA that the bbmf hopes to be not too far behind.

I've just had a look over the past few years on here and BBMF pda NOTAMs are normally 2hrs 30 long, where this one is 1hr 15.

BBMF should still be up lots this week anyway.

Last year, the mound was shut on PDA day and the police have been known to move people on from old fen lane and Reedham lane on pda day.

Cheers

thanks, any idea if they are likely to use Weds instead of Tues given the forecast for Tues says light cloud as opposed to sun on the Weds? thanks
