"The mound"

Post by Blackjack56 » Sun Aug 06, 2017 9:21 am

Hello all, i am planning a trip over to coningsby[stopping at Marham on the way] in late August and i was wondering if "the mound" was still closed to the public, it will be a shame if the closure was permanent as this is such a good spot for pictures as the sun is usually behind you, anyway even if it is i will still go as there are other good spots dotted around the base,Happy spotting everyone.Mark.

It was closed Thursday 3rd Aug. Nothing official by the looks of it, just some cones across the entrance. It is a good spot, maybe some of the regular guys can update us. I hope no-one has upset the land-owner. Apparently some spotters are pushing their luck @JohnsField Mildenhall (speeding, standing in crops, regular non-payers, yes you AW)Hope this is not the case and is just temporary,

It was open last Wednesday but closed on the Thursday. I believe it was closed due to the Typhoon display !

Hi

The mound was open when I was there a few weeks back.

In my opinion although the mound is a good viewing area - it is only good for photos if they are on 07 easterlies. When using the usual end and taking off towards the mound, the typhoons are quite high. Also if landing on 25 they often turn off short well out of range from the mound.

But as you probably know, photography at the 25 end is quite good anyway for landing and line up shots.

I was at Coningsby on the 10th August and it was coned off to vehicles that day but the BBMF were doing a display. Some people walked on and got moved by the military police who drove up to the fence from inside the base. Can anyone clarify if it's closed permanently or just when there are displays taking place?
