The anniversary of the closure of RAF Metheringham...

Post by Shippo » Wed Apr 20, 2016 12:31 pm

It has been 70 years since the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Air Force closed RAF Metheringham, the wartime home of 106 Squadron.

This aerodrome was built during 1942 and 1943 on 600 acres of farmland, located largely in the Parish of Martin but not far from Metheringham Railway Station.

The RAF bomber base was operational in time for the opening of the Battle of Berlin, and with its only one squadron which was based there, 106 Squadron went to war on 18th November 1943. Twenty two months later, the war in Europe ended with the defeat of Nazi Germany. The squadron had flown over 200 operations and suffered the loss of 59 Lancasters which failed to return from operations. However, the squadron then prepared to depart for the war in the Far East as part of '"Tiger Force."

467 Squadron ( RAAF) arrived to train with 106 Squadron for operations in the Far East. But the end of the war overtook this plan and 467 Squadron disbanded at the start of October 1945. 189 Squadron took its place but this squadron was stand down later. When Imperial Japan finally surrendered to the Allied Forces , the 106 Squadron disbanded some 6 months later. With no further use to the RAF, due to many aerodromes becoming surplus to requirements, the airfield was closed in the spring of 1946 with most of the land returning to its original use for agriculture.
