Lakenheath flying club

Post by Philwinward » Mon Apr 23, 2018 9:43 am

Can anybody confirm when the Lakenheath base flying club was closed down? I think it was about the time of the change from F111 to F15, but not certain.

I recall seeing their PA38 Traumahawks (sure it was these as opposed to Cherokees) flying around when the F-111s were there but don't have any recollection of seeing any sign since the Eagles arrived.

Have seen a Cherokee once or twice during my visits back in early 2000s.

I'm sure it finished around 1994/5. It went on a year or 2 after F111S but not long. Show too ended in 92. Think it was a general upping of security although we got on to bazaars until about 2001.I remember prob job going up before days launches and then they only flew at weekend. They used to be corner by the Warren?

From memory the Lakenheath Aero Club was ran as part of the 48th Support Group and was operating up until 1995/ 6ish. They operated at least one PA-38, N91342 which was often heard on the scanner doing local sorties. I believe the aero club was closed down following a spending review of support facilities which also saw the Rod and Gun club become a private venture, on the plus side......they kept the golf course.

The aircraft were also registered to the USAF.

Hope this helps..
