I don't know why but I kind of figured that they'd cut the chute loose once they'd shed most of their speed. Doesn't dragging it around like just damage the chute and perhaps stop it being reused?

It's only in the wrong wind conditions that the Buff's chute will drag along the ground, it's designed to need very little forward ground speed to stay fully open.

Was surprised the Greek Phantoms dragged them for so long at RIAT- were almost on static before the jettisoned them, then blew them clear with a rev of the engines.
