Signs of activity at MOD Lyneham

Post by chazzer » Fri May 16, 2014 6:47 am

First signs of major activity at Lyneham yesterday with the erection of the girderwork for several new buildings planned for the site.
Up till now only earth being dug up and replaced and demolition of old buildings and the appearance of large mounds of concrete hardcore from demolished buildings.
No aircraft activity as yet but not realy expected as Lynehams runway would need a good sweep before anything could land on it saying that we still have our ex Hercules fly very low over the airfield a couple of time a week so they havnt forgotton us at Brize yet :thumb: :thumb:

Not yet, but when they move from Cosford there will be! (along with Gosport's helicopters, but they don't move, and Arborfield's bits and bobs!)

There's been a lot of building activity and trenches and holes and even what pears to be a crater on the airfield.
Tonight at around 5 o'clock we ha most pf the ramp lighting lit up.
Presumably so the contractors can see to work once the clocks go back thos weekend.
Also 5 cranes erecting various new hangars or buildings..
The ramp lighting was a delight to see after 3 years of darkness.

Great picture sean. I live at the bottom of the maln runway and often walk around the field close to the base and have wondered what they were they are digging up by the control tower it looks
Iike a crater to me.
As a matter of interest are you returning to lyneham once it gets up and running in 2015/16.
Dare say there will be lots of soldiers sailors and airmen all wanting to learn to fly.

I believe the plan is for the RAF Lyneham flying club to move back once everything is completed but not 100% sure if that is still the plan, I moved clubs to Freedom Aviation Based at Kemble and Oaksey Park in May this year to finish off my PPL Training.

It will be nice tp see some activity again after three yerars absence.
We still get aircraft passing through the overhesd and a Bulldog often doing aerobatics.
We also get the hercules flying very low going southwest on a regular basis I understand that lynehm will not be an active base as it used to be.
I think that statement is only to please the locals who hate the thought of those Jaguars using the runway severl times a day.

Certainly would be nice to even see the occasional light aircraft take off, I have missed seeing all the Hercules and other visitors flying over my house on the approach.
