13th Auguat - Lynx & EH101

Post by Dick Johnston » Thu Aug 13, 2015 3:11 pm

Noted outside Westland's Training Facility this morning were an Algerian Lynx and an EH101 for Azerbaijan. No serials noted - can anyone help ID these please?

I looked in here on Friday. Flying was ZR339 whilst ZR343 was in the hangar along with Lynx ZK192 & ZK193.

Also reported by a friend at 6pm on 28 August was ZR328, an Algerian Merlin. Grey and red colour scheme. Is anyone able to confirm this? Has it returned from a previous delivery to Algeria? If so how long has ZR328 been at Westlands? More importantly however what colour was ZR339 and at what times did it fly? I assume ZR343 did not fly on Friday. Please advise as I saw 2 Merlins flying overhead Isles of Scilly at 10:30 and 12:30 respectively and want to identify the ones I saw. Here's hoping for further info. Cheers John.

ZR343 : http://www.helis.com/database/cn/30460/

I have not personally seen, nor read any convincing reports of Azerbaijan or Algerian Merlins outside at Westlands Yeovil recently. I'm unconvinced so far, and suspect that the reports of either being at St Mawgan are incorrect.

Thanks Malcolm. My fellow military only spotter also reported ZK192 & ZK193 & ZR343 as read off in the westland hangar at 6pm! With ZR328 as flying during the afternoon. I will speak to him tomorrow to establish how confident he is of the serial, since both ZR328 & 329 were both previously listed as delivered to Algeria on the same day. Cheers John. I took a photograph of a white & green merlin flying over the Isles of Scilly in the distance heading back to Lands End at approximately 10:45. Another came over at around 12:30 and headed back towards Lands End, although this could have come from Culdrose.

Hi all, concerning my earlier posts, it would appear the report of ZR328 may actually be an error. Apparently it was read off from the beach and therefore the 28 was assumed. Given this it would be more likely it was ZR339 as reported as flying from St Mawgan on the same day! Also I have looked at my photograph on an iPad and the colour scheme looks like 339 and is not green/white but more multi coloured rather than just grey/red. Hopefully tomorrow it will be confirmed as my friend is now going back on Tuesday. My apologies to all and thanks to Malcolm for providing photo links to 339 & 343. Cheers John

ZR339 flew in the afternoon of 28 August for about 2 - 3 hours, AFAIK ZR343 did not fly during this time.

Sorry for coming back to my own thread late in the day - I have been away on holiday.

Sightings at Newquay were as follows:

11/12 Aug - AW101 visible in partially open hangar
12 Aug - Algerian Lynx outside all afternoon; engine runs late pm and (I think) a brief flight at WHE11
13 Aug - AW101 (Azerbaijan c/s as per the photo of ZR339 at the link) and Algerian Lynx (full c/s) both outside on ramp all morning.

All noted at reasonably close range as I taxied past in my Tutor, although not close enough to read the serials with naked eye.

From the other reports for later on in August, it would seem that unfortunately there were indeed more than one of each type working out of the Westland Training Fcaility at the time of my sightings.

ZK192 was the lynx on the 12th and was the only one flying that day
ZR339 was the EH101 which is one of 2 AW Demonstrators in there house colours. Dont know where your getting the Azerbaijan bit from.............. and the lynx was ZK192
as for the partially opened hangar bit take your pick there was 2 in there ZR339 and the other demonstrator ZR343.

cheers
