Bob Jones Airshow - Welshpool Sun 14th June

Post by roughcutter » Mon Dec 29, 2014 3:17 pm

After seeing Craig Slumans remarkable shots of this event last Summer, I'm very tempted to attend the next one in June next year. Can anyone advise me the lay of the land there, the best photo spots etc..

Looks not a bad line up for this one http://www.welshpoolairshow.co.uk/Airsh ... oster.html. Where's the best vantage points for getting decent pix?

This is a great little air show, I have been last 2 years and thoroughly enjoyed. It is limited for photography somewhat but if you get there early enough you can get quite close to the runway. my only gripe is the access. Unless you are prepared to get there very early you are likely to encounter the most horrendous wait in traffic. If I go this year I intend to park some way away and ride in on my bike. This year's is scheduled for Sunday 14 June.

Cheers for the feedback and advice Art, I'll certainly take it onboard :thumb: . As for seating or parking for that matter I'm not sure, Welshpool airfield is a tiny place. Perhaps they open up one of the adjacent farmers fields for parking?

I haven't seen any seating but lots of people take fold up chairs. Parking is more than adequate on the adjacent fields but entry and exit is very limited so queues are inevitable. Last year they opened a gate on the bottom field which takes you along a very rutted track, if you have a low car avoid it. I have an Insignia and I went along it last year and ended up with lots of mud on the exhaust and underside which needed jetwashing :thumb: I'm sure you will enjoy the show if you decide to go.

Yeah, definitely going to this one, somewhere different for a change and a nice location too. I've found lately that the smaller venues are just as enjoyable (if not better) than the bigger events.

There's a large hill as the backdrop to this airfield and I heard that some people took great photos of the Vulcan from that vantage point but I have no idea how to get there.

If you look at the map, there is a rise to the west of the runway with road and line of trees along the ridge, and a canal also runs parallel to it. However it does look a fair distance from the airfield, I guess you would need to use a fairly powerful lens (500mm?) for any decent shots? :)
