Places to view Cliff flying in Cornwall
Evening never had much luck in Cornwall in getting any shots of Culdrose Sea Kings, next week down St Ives any help with prime locations would be most welcome. Many thanks in advance.

Re: Places to view Cliff flying in Cornwall
It might be worth checking if any of the lifeboat stations have any displays or exercises planned, but these can all be interrupted by live incidents.
Re: Places to view Cliff flying in Cornwall
During the day it is quite common to see training flights operating on the North Cliffs between Portreath and Godrevy. I have seen a few Sea King flights hovering low over the rocks near to Bassets Cove (B3301) a trick is for them to try and land one wheel on the rocks whilst hovering over the sea.
Park at Tehidy Park North Cliffs Car Park and cross the road to the East and head down to the coast foot path (nice walk anyway). Mid morning to Mid Afternoon is a common operating period.

Hi rob666,
In addition, I would suggest that you park up at the Culdrose viewing area. You would most probably will see a lot of aircraft and helo activity, including 771 Sqn Rescue Sea Kings - but also I would agree the north coast from Lands End to Newquay and beyond would probably be your best bet to see 771 Sqn Sea Kings in action.
Also, along the south coast from the Lizard to St. Austell (but especially over high ground such as ours: i.e: Stithians, Carnon Downs & Truro areas)
These are Red and Grey coloured Sea Kings between 1000 & 2000ft drifting around in our areas --Paul

Coastal foot path that leads up to Penhale camp West of Holywell bay near Newquay is a good spot for confined landing practice shots.
Also Dean quarry out on the lizard is a regular spot. And if you walk around the fence towards Culdrose from helston, if your lucky you might catch somthing doing hover checks on the compass base (which is within the golf course ) this can make for some very nice low angle photos

The cliffs next to Kynance cove are worth a try plus it's proximity to RAF Predannack makes it a worthy trip.

Aircraftpaulcornwall, Buzzer and 09Andrew, some great advice will try and pity it to some good use.

P.S was unlucky today on arrival missed 771Sqn flying low over Smeatons Pier.

After the police raids, Cliff will probably give this country a bit of a swerve!

Hi Rob666,
Many thanks - and you're very welcome - do hope that on your visit you get to see some good helicopter and aircraft action flying in and out from Culdrose.
As said before, daytimes, especially Monday to Friday are well worth looking at, and as buzzer said, also almost any evenings (nowadays) apart from Friday,
when they seem to pack up early in time for their weekend break!!
However, my and many other's favourites, 771 Sqn Rescue Sea Kings (call signs Rescue 192 & Rescue 193) can be seen at any time throughout the 365 days of each year!!
Slogen51 - very good - a brilliant play on words and I am sure that all of us on here had a good laugh about this one!! --Paul

Well seen plenty of 771Sqn but none to get a picture of any note. Just a Heads up for any one local to St Ives this Thursday at 6.30 the St Ives Lifeboat Station is going to have an exercise sure it will be the Lifeboat only.

Splendid review,Paul. Also worth a mention in case you weren't aware.Aircraftpaulcornwall wrote:Hi rob666,

One is almost, perhaps more likely to spot a Merlin cliff/rescue training these days. In fact the Royal Navy will continue with SAR once the Sea Kings are gone.
I noticed a Merlin half a mile or so off Halzephron this afternoon, seemingly rescue training. It was hovering a winch cable's length off the sea for almost an hour.

Re: Places to view Cliff flying in Cornwall
Hi Malf,
Yes, many thanks mate! - much appreciated.
It's good to know that the Merlins are going to take up some of the SAR duties also - they are very capable helicopters and would make
excellent rescue assets I would imagine.
Let's hope that in the future we will see many more of these around doing their exercises and hopefully also some 'real' - you never know -
some of their call signs may be changed to Rescue 192/Rescue 193 to keep the tradition alive!!
I should imagine that you had a great view of it all down at Halzephron - ideal for spotting I should imagine! --Paul

Just a quick thank you for the info, did not get any luck but will store this for next time. Having said that saw a few over St Ives 771Sqn but never had anything more than my 50mm on......
