RAF Waddington 2016 Air Show in doubt

RAF Waddington 2016 air show faces overrun threat
11 June 2015

Work on the runway at a major RAF base will overrun, it has been confirmed.

RAF Waddington closed its runway in late 2014 for a £35m rebuild which was expected to take about a year to complete.
But the MoD has said due to problems with wet ground and unexpected pipes and cables, work will continue until "summer 2016".
The news has prompted concerns the base's air show, cancelled in 2015, might never return.
The RAF Waddington air show, which usually takes place in July, is one of the largest events of its type in the country, attracting about 150,000 visitors.

Air show pilot Stuart Reid said: "Waddington is a massive undertaking. You must organise it months, if not years in advance, to secure the services of support personnel and other participants. "If there is a question mark over when the work finishes, can you commit them and yourself to it?"
A wider review of air shows across the UK is ongoing and there has been no statement on the Waddington event's future.
The RAF said the work would keep the runway fit for use for the next 25 years.
John Robinson, who runs the nearby Wave viewing platform and cafe, said: "It has been shocking. We have lost 70-75% of our trade overnight when the aircraft left. "Without the aircraft there is not much reason for people to come here no matter how good the food and drink. "This winter is going to be extremely difficult, we had budgeted for the original closure, now we will struggle to survive."
Customers said the delay was "disgraceful" and any threat to the air show would be "the RAF shooting itself in the foot".
An MoD statement said unexpected clay soils had become saturated in a wet winter and these delays had been compounded by underground services which had not appeared on plans.

The airshow team held a show in September as a Battle of Britain day when it was held at Finningley. The team moved to the July slot at Waddington, when Finningley closed.

With news RNAS Yeovilton Air Day will be taking the usual Waddington weekend next year, I guess we can say there will be no Waddington in 2016. Not that will surprise many people :(
Posh are going to Wembley (albeit for a tin cup)

I noticed on the last page of yesterday's Yorkshire Airshow programme that next years show is on what would have been the Waddington weekend (3-4 July) and promised some very big things like Patrouille de France, F18 and B1 Lancer!!!

Also heard a lot of talk from locals stating that due to the ongoing runway issues at Waddington the 2016 show will be held at Church Fenton, hence why it will be the 'Great' Yorkshire Airshow next year.

Probably totally fictional but I thought it was worth a mention I know you guys love a good rumour!!! lol

Could be a good year for other airshows if a B-1 is on the scene!

I think it's very wishful thinking to say a B-1 would attend the Yorkshire airshow 10 months from now. If one was to come over it would more than likely go to RIAT or Farnborough or both.

Two questions if the previous report and other threads concerning Waddington 2016

1) What condition is Church Fenton in with respect to runway and hard standing to host a major show, also how easy is road access should a large crowd attend ?

2) What about Doncaster Rood Hood (formally RAF Finningley) it has certain commercial flights, but how many at weekends and could an airshow work around them. Again what condition are the hardstanding / Taxiway that would be required to host an Airshow.

Guess this will run and run.
