Dear FRIAT Member
Thank you for your feedback following RIAT 2016 and in previous years. We find this feedback invaluable to help improve the experience we deliver. For the past few years, we have held a FRIAT Forum to update you on changes we are making. However, we believe over the past few years we have addressed the majority of your concerns so this year we will not be holding a Forum. Some of the changes implemented as a result of your feedback are:
Grandstand
The Grandstand supplier from 2016 will not be returning this year as you said you preferred the previous 2015 Grandstand so we have returned to that Grandstand supplier.
Loyalty Scheme
A number of you requested that we reward loyalty so this year we have implemented a loyalty scheme, of which many of you have benefited from.
FRIAT Entry Lane
A dedicated FRIAT entry point has often been the subject of discussion at the Forum and this has only been possible at the Blue Entry Point with Gate J working very well for the last 2 years. At the Red, Yellow and Green entry there will be a lane marked Disabled/FRIAT for members to use. In 2016 Gate J was opened 5 minutes earlier than Gate K (external public gate at Blue) which gave members time to get up to the Customer Entry Point before the public gate was opened. The plan is for this to be repeated in 2017.
Draft Beer
Requests for draft beer in the enclosure have been fed back to the catering supplier and we have been assured that there will be draft beer available in the enclosure this year.
Etiquette Information
We had feedback that some members weren't aware/didn't understand the etiquette of the FRIAT enclosure, particularly the Grandstand so we will include some more detail in the packs and emails prior to the event. If you have any thoughts on what you would like to see in this please email FRIAT@rafcte.com by 31 March.
New FRIAT Enclosure Entrance
In 2016 the FRIAT entrance was moved from the south of the enclosure to the west due to the poor state of the grass area behind the enclosure. The plan is for the FRIAT entrance to stay west of the enclosure in 2017 with no future plans to move it back.
Many thanks for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you all in July.
Did you know that registration to Fighter Control is completely free and brings you lots of added features? Find out more....

Re: FRIAT 2017
Hi all,
Not done the grandstand for over 15 years, but this year me & my father have FRIAT passes. What sort of lens is needed in the grandstand?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers Andy

Re: FRIAT 2017
Hi Andy, welcome back to FRIAT.
Couple of things to consider.
Are you using a camera with a full frame sensor or a smaller sensor?
The lenses I list below are for use on a full frame camera (Canon 5DmkIII) so if your sensor is
not full frame, the equivalent focal length will be increased by 1.4 (roughly), hence a 300mm on a full frame is a true 300mm but equivalent to a 420mm
on a smaller sensor.
Soooo...
Based on shooting single aircraft;-
200mm is good for side on shots of aircraft taking off in general but aircraft come in all shapes and sizes!
300mm is excellent for capturing a front or rear angle on aircraft taking off once they have passed your vantage point.
420mm (300 plus a 1.4 converter) is OK for display shots on the closest point of the display, i.e. over the display line cones.
500mm+ would be required for anything beyond that.
So to answer your question, take the biggest lens you have and maybe a 100-400mm zoom if you have one.
Hope that helps, the FRIAT stand is great for the flying display.
Have a great time.
Droptank.

Re: FRIAT 2017
Hi Droptank,
Thank you very much for the info, that's everything I need to know. I have a 7D mk 2, a 28-300mm L & a 100-400mm mk 2. So sounds like I'll be ok, 400mm outside the fence for displays are borderline useless these days! Very much looking forward to getting back inside this year for one of the best seats in the house.
Also good to hear draft beer will be available, may have to save myself to mid afternoon, just to have consistent shots lol.
May see you there,
All the best Andy T

Re: FRIAT 2017
I liked the mobile bar they had last year as the beer was ice cold. Glad they had got the draft stuff back though.

Re: FRIAT 2017
I wonder how ridiculous the price of the beer will be, we are after all a captive audience!

Re: FRIAT 2017
Just checked 2016 published prices in the programme and it was £4.00 for a pint of bitter and £4.20 for Lager.
Not sure if it was any different in FRIAT.
I reckon it will be similar this year, you won't care by the time you've had six or seven!

Re: FRIAT 2017
It's the same price in FRIAT as the main showground, I don't mind paying those prices for a pint as that's getting the norm in my local back home . I do begrudge the food prices though, for example £5+ for a bacon / egg bap it's over the top for the quality of food you usually get

Re: FRIAT 2017
Thanks chaps, I agree the beer pricing is far more acceptable than the food!
Probably do what we usually do, eat at the campsite, fast all day and get something filling on the way back to Totterdown.

Trying to decide what to do on Thursday. Torn between East P&V and the grandstand, what do you think?
