Hyakuri access

A quick question for anybody that's visited Hyakuri...do you need to be able to speak Japanese to gain access to the towers through the 'peace gate'?

The quick answer is no. But, obviously less prone to misunderstanding if you can get a native to make the call to the little old lady gatekeeper. She doesn't speak English beyond a couple of odd words - which is better than my Japanese.

Thanks! I'm trying to learn a bit, but it's not easy

Got 4 months to brush up, but can't wait!

sometimes her son comes with her, he seems to understand a little English, but still difficult. If you can make contact with a Japanese spotter first it will make your life a lot easier. There are normally some around and hopefully one that will speak a little English. As long as you have the telephone number, get them to explain to her what you want. We have even arranged access at a pre-agreed time 2-3 days in advance with her. Then call when you get there. She make take 10 mins or so to turn up but we have never had a problem and none of us speak Japanese

Last week, a couple of the signs had gone from the gate, along with the contact telephone number. Thankfully though, the 'old' number was still good :thumb:

When the security turned up, we asked them if they could phone her using our phone. Very helpful guys.
