Voyager Air Tanker Flights Suspended

Posted on 04/15/2017 by Rachel Holland
As part of on-going monitoring of the state of repair of the Ascension Island’s runway, the MOD is temporarily rerouting the South Atlantic Airbridge via an alternative location and have decided to suspend operations to Ascension Island for landing the A330 (Voyager Air Tanker) until further notice.

The MOD will ensure the continuation of military support to the Falkland Islands through an alternative hub, and are working the Foreign Office to put in place measures to support the people who work on Ascension Island.

AIG will issue further updates once further information has been received from the MOD.

Please note this will not affect emergency medical evacuation flights.

They have used Recife, Brazil in the past, I assume that's still available to us, no political objections etc.

Still available to smaller aircraft but potholes and cracks will need substantial sub course repairs. Everything will have to be cargoed across by ship further delaying repairs

Telegraph provides some details behind the MOD statement ,........Due to capacity issues in Ascension Island, it has been necessary to limit the number of the non-essential population there.

The American contact shuttle using a B757 flying from Patrick AFB, are still using Ascension on a weekly basis. Some returning UK Ascension personnel are having to sail on the RMS St. Helena to Cape Town and then fly to Heathrow, a ten day trip that normally would take by Voyager 8 1/2 hours, and it is the only way to get there as well. Apparently service personnel aren't affected as other arrangements are to be made for them (flights!.)
