Japan trip

Post by MRTT » Fri Mar 24, 2017 3:08 am

Morning all,

Hoping to ask my way over to Japan at the start of 2018, anyone able to point me in the right direction of bases to visit/museums?

Just bear in mind that the museum near Gifu is closed for another twelve months (at least?).

Depends what you want to see, how many days you've got, access to a car (or use of trains) and whether you have people with you who don't want to look at aeroplanes all day :P

I can help with Hyakuri, Gifu, Komatsu, Iruma, Atsugi and Miho...I'm sure plenty of others on the board will be able to offer advice too :thumb:

Thanks for that Mic, F-4s are the main aim. :thumb:

I'd most likely be going with three others, all are interested in aviation so shouldn't be too bad.

The website says "around fall 2017". Meanwhile one storage hall is still open.

The bulk are obviously based at Hyakuri, with 301, 302 and 501 Hikotai - with around 60 airframes in total. A handful for flight test are based at Gifu, these being mostly straight F-4EJ rather than the upgraded 'Kai' version flown by 301/302. For servicing they come and go regularly from the Mitsubishi factory at Nagoya/Komaki. The dozen non upgraded airframes 'in store' at Nagoya are presumably never to see the light of day again.

Hello all,

I thought I'd tag onto MRTT's thread as I'm hoping to get to Hyakuri at the start of 2018 too. My question primarily is; does anyone know of a source that can tell me if there is likely to be any flying possible on Tuesday 9th of January? I ask because I'm aware that in Japan New Year is all important an that Japan can close down a bit around that time of year as people tend to head home to see family. And also, Monday the 8th I believe is a bank holiday to celebrate turning 20 years old day.

I'm going to Japan on Boxing day and fly back from Narita on the 10th. Due to heading down to Kyushu to spend the New Year with family, I don't think that I have any other opportunity to get near an air base other than that one day at the end of my trip.

Any other general advice would be appreciated and even if someone has any links to any Japanese sites. I can ask the missus to translate and even contact any good local contacts for information/advice.

Thanks

Phil

Hi Phil,

it appears to me that the bases of all three branches are effectively closed the two weeks around Christmas (or more likely the Emperor's birthday), except for the odd SAR/Alert scramble. Normal operations resume middle/end of the first week of January, exact date can vary base by base. I would suggest that you should be good by the 9th, even with the public holiday on the 8th.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm about to be away for a few days, but once I'm back I might be back in touch after a bit more information - if you don't mind. Thanks again, Phil.
