Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage, contacts etc.

Post by cgull123 » Fri Mar 11, 2011 12:49 pm

Lincolnshires proud aviation heritage is managed through North Kesteven District Council

There are many events at the bases throughout the year

Most of the events have there own leaflets that are available in the Council offices in Sleaford. There is a particularly good Heart of Lincolnshire booklet with plenty of my photos in it!

There are base tours available, one does Waddington and Digby (only selected parts), symposiums, talks, etc
There is a charge for these events

For further info, contact laura_meadows@n-kesteven.gov.uk

There is also now an aviation heritage team of Dave Harrigan MBE and Phil Bonner. They can be contacted at:

Phil_Bonner@n-kesteven.gov.uk

Dave_Harrigan@n-kesteven.gov.uk

Also check ot the website http://www.visitlincolnshire.com/aviation/

Hope this info is of use

They're actually called Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire (so as not to get confussed with East Kirkby).

The following link shows their involvement with Cockpit-Fest 2011 http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/newsItem.php?id=291" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This was the notes to editors information from the same News Release, which provides more background about this HLF supported project:

Notes for Editors

Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire (AHL) is a unique partnership promoting the extensive aviation experience that is to be found in the county. The partnership has its roots in a steering group initiated in 2004 by North Kesteven District Council (NKDC), which looked at how best to provide an integrated, cohesive marketing and branding approach to aviation heritage. Out of the study came the formation of the Lincolnshire Integrated Aviation Heritage Partnership (LIAHP) which incorporated Lincolnshire County Council, West and East Lindsey District Councils as well as NKDC, Visit Lincolnshire and Business Link, and a wide range of aviation heritage sites across the county.

A bid was submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to help develop the county’s aviation heritage, which included - amongst other things – the provision for a full-time worker to support the sites. This application was unsuccessful, but a second bid, this time for two posts, was approved in 2009.

After a very competitive recruiting process, Phil Bonner was recruited as the Aviation Development Officer (ADO) whilst Dave Harrigan was recruited as the Outreach and Learning Officer (OLO). They took up their appointments early in 2010, which coincided with LIAHP being re-named as Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire.

Their remit is to work with various key sites over the next 3 years, raising the profile of the aviation heritage product in the county, and promoting aviation within the schools and colleges. The sites are varied in their size and the range of exhibits they offer, as you can appreciate as you navigate around the website.

Though there was no direct funding awarded to individual sites, the grant pays for Phil and Dave to work full time on behalf of the sites. They work closely with other agencies such as Renaissance East Midlands to raise the standard within the county, as well as engaging in the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme (VAQAS) and Places of Interest Quality Assurance Scheme (PIQAS). Administrative support for the two posts is provided by Visit Lincolnshire, which has enabled Dave and Phil to draw on its marketing resources and IT support.

Maybe of some help to folks doing research, some of the USAAF casulties have listed in the details section the aircraft and location but not all. I have found it quite useful.

As previously posted Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire (AHL) is not the same as the NKDC – although since the demise of Visit Lincolnshire AHL do now have their offices at NKDC in Sleaford.

This article details the recent Aviation Conference held at Hemswell Court http://www.key.aero/view_news.asp?ID=41 ... n=historic" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as you will see there is mention of a year of aviation.

“Delegates were also provided with details of Lincolnshire’s 2012 Year of Aviation; a programme of events that will feature ten (10) themed aviation events and activities across the county next year.”

Also if you check out this link http://www.visitlincolnshire.com/aviation/news" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; you will see a series of events mentioned for December this year relating to “Pilot Officer John Magee, the poet pilot who wrote the poem ‘High Flight’.”

I will post more details when I see them!! ;)

Lincolnshire’s 2012 Year of Aviation will cover a range of topics from the RFC, through World War II and the Cold War right up to the Falklands Campaign; and will include talks and other activities.

As soon as I have dates and details I’ll ensure that they are posted here!! :thumb:

I understand from the AHL team that following the recent media coverage across the UK that there has been an increased interest in the Magee talk on Saturday 10th December. As a consequence it could be wise for people that are hoping to attend to pre-book rather than wait and pay on the door.

This should help with the AHL events; a copy of a news release that was issued just before Christmas and it does have its own thread:

"2012 - Lincolnshire’s Year of Aviation

Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire (AHL) is funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) award of £436,000 and throughout 2012 the AHL Team will be organising a series of events and talks at venues across Lincolnshire which will highlight the county’s diverse aviation heritage and history.

17th April 2012 – Augsburg Raid 70th Anniversary Talk
An evening talk by the aviation historian Robert Owen to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the RAF’s major daylight bombing raid on the MAN diesel factory in Augsburg, Southern Germany.
Venue: The Petwood Hotel, Woodhall Spa, Lincs, LN10 6QG

16th May 2012 – Falklands Campaign 30th Anniversary
“Sailing With The Queen” An evening talk by Chief Pattisier Stephen Hallam about his exploits from pampering passengers luxuriously cruising around the world to suddenly being thrown into the cold and stark reality of the South Atlantic Campaign.
Venue: The Branston Hall Hotel, Branston, Lincoln, LN4 1PD

June 2012 – RFC Talk
Talk by aviation historian Andy Johnson about the formation of the Royal Flying Corps and its connections to Lincolnshire and early aviation. Date and venue to be confirmed.

29th September 2012 – Tribute to the Eagle Squadrons Memorial Unveiling & Talk
Memorial unveiling at Kirton in Lindsey Town Hall, followed by a talk by Phil Bonner, Aviation Development Officer, AHL about the American Air Force Squadrons that were based at RAF Kirton in Lindsey during World War II.
Venue: The Town Hall, Kirton in Lindsey, North Lincs DN21 4LZ

14th to 28th October 2012 – Cuban Missile Crisis, Tour & Talks
A series of talks and events covering the period of the Cuban Missile Crisis which occurred 50 years ago that month; these will include a talk by aviation historian John Boyce and an escorted coach tour of several Cold War locations across Lincolnshire.

Advanced booking arrangements for each event will be posted on the AHL website approximately 3 months before the date of the event; proceeds from each event will go towards an event related service charity."
