IV (R) Sqn to St Athan for August..

Post by lowlevelRAF » Tue Jul 26, 2016 8:16 am

HI Guys,

Does anybody know when the Hawk's are leaving for St Athan? Been following the runway work updates, as on holiday in Anglesey 30th July til 6th August, I was hoping to catch them, then saw this on the RAF site.
Royal Air Force Valley Hawk T2 Detachment to MOD St Athan

A detachment of Royal Air Force Hawk T2 advanced fast jet training aircraft will be deployed to MOD St Athan for the month of August, while essential runway re-furbishment work is carried out at their home base.

The aircraft - from IV(R) Squadron based at RAF Valley - will be conducting routine training missions as part of its role in training future Fighter Pilots for the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. MOD St Athan was chosen both for its facilities and its location, which allow IV(R) Squadron to train in much the same areas of the UK that it would from RAF Valley.

Wing Commander Paul Mounsey, Officer Commanding IV(R) Squadron said: “Our deployment to MOD St Athan will allow us to continue our essential role – training future Fighter Pilots for the RAF and RN. It will also allow us to practice our air and ground crews in the skills required for operating away from their home base, which offers good training for deployed operations. We are very grateful for the assistance given to us by the personnel at St Athan, and we look forward to what I hope will be a very successful month in South Wales”.

If they are pre-positioning this week, I might still pop in to Valley to catch the 202 (R) Sqn lot. Aha trust me to go on holiday when the T2's are heading south for the month!

Matt :)

Do you know how many arrived and where they will be parked / operating from ?.

Sorry have not been to St Athan for years , so do not know the layout / viewing areas.

Tempted to visit as it's closer to me than Valley.

Many thanks

Hi
11 hawks have arrived and have parked on the super hangar apron just to the East of the disused runway. This area can only be viewed from the railway bridge to the south of the airfield

A single T2 landed at Valley this afternoon just after 2 Griffins arrived, couldn't ID the Hawk but one of the Griffins was coded L.

The RCT became part of the RLC some years ago. If you mean Aldershot, that's quite a long way from 4FTS' normal operating area.

I know. I posted that to draw attention to the confusion which may result from using TLAs which may not be familiar to all. :)
