Post by Crus8der » Mon Aug 20, 2018 10:14 pm

Hi,
Following on from my recent 'Sounds of the 70's C-130's' request:
Into the next decade now (Times all local) with yet more C-130's all routing down Airways via Midhurst-Worthing:
29.01.1980..@ 14:15....USAF......c/s OLD975
18.02.1980..@ 09:50....USAF......c/s OLD 92
03.03.1980..@ 12:40*...USAF?.....c/s ANORAK 619
03.03.1980..@ 13:15*...USAF?.....c/s ANORAK 620
08.06.1980..@ 12:40....USAF......c/s ALE39........(possibly HALE?)
08.06.1980..@ 17:05....USAF......c/s ALE33B.......(---as above---)
22.07.1980..@ 19:30....Algerian..c/s AA2839.......(Dunsfold-Worthing)
31.07.1980..@ 18:00.....?..........c/s TV102
30.11.1980..@ 10:50....Algerian..c/s AA8319
05.12.1980..@ 11.05....Italian AF.c/s ??
06.12.1980..@ 10:30....USAF......c/s OLD230

* prior to these two Hercs @ 09:10 a flight of 5, then another 4 unid/d fighters (possibly F-111's) con-trailed
in loose formations approx Midhurst-Worthing which may have been connected?

Any tie-ups gratefully received - thanks

TV102 is an interesting one as it was also the callsign of the Transamerica A/L DC-10 N102TV - which was current at that date.
Cheers, Bob

Reference the two aircraft shown as Algerian, I would have suggested one of the three L-100's that were operated by Air Algerie but they were not delivered until 1981. Also the Algerian Air Force machines were delivered from 1982 onwards.

Remember "OLD..." was the c/s used by Mildenhall's rotational C-130 squadron.

Thanks - Maybe there was some leasing going on prior to their acquisition?

As to 'OLD' - thanks Graham, yes I was familiar with that.
A note to the original req:
Given the decreasing lack of (even then) military movements in the SE of England, Hercs always stood out back then by their sound.
Easy enough to see - more difficult to catch a call-sign, let alone the controller - if I was lucky I got a couple of bites - one on the initial call,
especially by radio tone, but if not, then when changing to F/Control, but by then very faint. Rob
