Mildenhall April 1971

Post by SGS » Tue May 29, 2018 10:36 pm

We travelled south to catch the 4 B-52s at Marham and then continued onto Mildenhall later that day the 10th of April 1971.
I have a log of the 135s at the Hall that day but no record of any C-130s.

Could it have been a no-130 day or is there another gap in my log book.

Would suggest the latter. I went the weekend before to see the B-52's and there were definitely C-130E's at Mildenhall then.

The rotational C-130E squadron in place at the time was Pope's 464TAW,777TAS - tail code PB. Although it deployed with 16 a/c its very unlikely that all would have been present on a single day as normally several would be spread out on tasks around Europe. Had to make a few trips to Marham, not only for the B-52's but also for the 2 FB-111A's that SAC deployed to take part in the Bombing Competition - think they arrived on the 17th April.

Indeed only noted 5 C-130E's on 03/04/71 and 8 when we went back up to Marham for the FB-111's on 18/04/71.

was also at Mildenhall 03/04/71 noted 7 x 'PB' C-130E's non "copped"
also present were 28 x 48TFW F-100's mix of 'LR' 'LT' & 'LS' codes presume Lakenheath's runway was up

SGS suspect you dci not write the C-130's down because those PB E's were very common

also present was the "famous" C-141A 40612 436MAW 64-0612

Would be interesting if anyone has a list of the C-130's on that rotation as my long term aim is to establish dates and locations for a few remaining 130's that I have logged but without dates. Its not an exercise of finding new serials but completing my logs.

Thanks to all who have assisted upto now....

On 25/3/71 we saw the following 'PB' coded C130E at Mildenhall

62-1799
63-7793
63-7794
63-7823
63-7851
63-7860
64-0550
64-17681

My copies of 1971 BARG are currently hidden in the loft but I'm sure they'd report the complete rotation. By the airshow in late May the rotation had changed to 'FB' coded C130E.

Agree, except for 37793 and 37851 - had both of these as FB's. The other PB's were 21793, 21842, 21851, 21866, 37770, 37800, 37836, 37838, 37898 and 40527. Had a look in BARG - not listed!

Bearing in mind the serial presentation, a simple case of mis-poled FY there then: 37793 = 21793 and 37851 = 21851. I logged both on 21.3.71 and 25.4.71. Afraid I wasn't there on 10 April.
Cheers, ZF.

That run down of TDY C-130s would be of great interest. Can anyone confirm if this is in any of the BARGs that have been issued on CDs or could we find a date for this and I will try to find back numbers.

Should have mentioned in my original reply that BARG didn't list that deployment at the time. Precinct is right, BARG did do a run down - in the Jan'96 issue. Great effort by Dave Wilton.

Hi,
My first ever post on here so bear with me please.
Looking at old logs, just a bit earlier, on 22.03.71 - after hand delivering parcels to Peterborough during the then Postal strike I hitched/walked out to Marham to catch the 4 x B-52's
Found 2 on the ground and luckily 2 over the top but seems I was too early for the 2 x FB-111's which I knew nothing about until tonight!

Then first time at Mildenhall too and PB Hercs noted were:
(37)842 but whether I read the '37' I've no idea now - so from ZappaFan's info above as a PB I assume it must have been 21842 - same goes for
(37)851
37898 and another penciled in as
??(668)
Also in were: C-133 59-0532 & EC-135N 60-0365 plus regulars T-39's 24461 & 24477, C-47's 77214 & 48343 and T-29 13816 along with 5 based EC-135's and 5 KC-135's
How times change
Cheers

taken from my 1970 logs - 348thTAS 516thTAW/DB 61stTAS 64thTAW/ST 62ndTAS 64thTAW/SR 40thTAS 464thTAW/PG 41stTAS 464thTAW/PR But no PB?
As for 668 - I have 69-6568 on the 19.06.1970 tail code ST 1970 is all I have for this era until 1977 other things to do between those missing years
 I have just taken a look at the Bob Archer publication "The US AIR FORCE" and there were PB coded C130's from Pope the same as PG & PR

Thanks on the potential '668'. Way too long ago to glean anything else from my log though somewhere I may still have my original scribbled notes!
I do know that by the time I got down to Mildenhall it was early evening and I seem to recall the Hercs were parked South side then - read through the Northern fence (the good old days) with my Hilkinson Pancratic scope! Cheers

yes I know where you are coming from, I still have my original log book from when I started mid 66 but in those days all I wrote was type, serial & code and I must admit that is causing me problems trying to tie-up bits I am awaiting the release of the CD which covers this period
