INDIAN AIR FORCE CANBERRA KEMBLE SUN 18/6/1972

Post by razzer56 » Tue Apr 03, 2018 12:00 pm

Hi All,

For a NIF. He saw an Indian AF Canberra on the above date parked on the Hard standing just past Hangar 2, whilst traveling as a passenger in a car from the Chippenham direction towards Kemble.
The Canberra was quite close to the fence and its nose was pointing toward Kemble. Unfortunately the driver was not interested in aircraft and would not stop.
Can any one please help with the i.d. for this machine. I believe Kemble had a contract to refurbish Canberras for India at this time.

Mr Razzer,

Nothing to do with a refurbishment contract at Kemble. BAC at Salmesbury had a Canberra refurbishment contract for India but due to the Indo-Pakistan war, two aircraft were embargoed. WE191/Q497 arrived at Kemble for storage 7.6.66 and was declared Non-Effective 30.6.72. The fuselage went to Samlesbury in '78, later to Warton, then to Dumfries & Galloway Aviation Museum. The cockpit section later went to 2AV8 at Stranraer.

The second was WH845/Q496 which arrived at Kemble 25.1.67. It was also declared NEA 30.6.72, was later sold to BAC Warton 14.8.72 and was refurbished for the Peruvian AF.

As to which one was outside on 18.6.72 - your guess is as good as mine.
