Preserved Mig-21 , Cairo 02/11/2007

Post by knutt » Sun Jan 29, 2017 10:13 am

I am trying to identify a preserved Mig-21 I saw in Cairo on 02/11/2007.It was pole mounted and was in a built up area and was easily seen from the road.It was seen ethier during the journey from Cairo International Airport to the Citadel of Salah al-Din or the journey from Citadel of Salah al-Din to the Giza Pyramids ( I cannot remember which ).I was traveling on a Coach as part of a tour and it was seen to the left side of the road.

Thanks
Kevin

There's a number of aircraft preserved at 30.074309, 31.306249. There's too many possible routes for your Citadel to Giza route for me to be able to check them all.

I don't think that could have been the one, from what I can remember it was mounted at a steeper angle (up to 45 degrees) and I saw it from a major road (2 lanes or more each direction), besides it was more than 9 years ago.

thanks for your help both of you.

Kevin,
I think EGVP has correctly identified your bird. I took the familiar route from the airport to the city three months later. It's the route where you can look over the wall into the Almaza airforce field before you get to the location described. I can e-mail you shots taken from the bus of the Mig and Su at 45 degrees if you want.

I passed this one on the bus from Port Said to the Pyramids (bashed an old lady out of the way to get a picture out of the window, sorry m'love... .)

Ditto, but not the bit about hitting the old lady.
