The RAF is set to receive 3 extra fast jet squadrons in defence review next week: 2 operational Typhoon squadrons and 1 for training 1/

Deborah Haynes ‏@haynesdeborah 34m34 minutes ago
Up to 36 Typhoon jets to be taken out of storage. Original variant will do air defence, freeing up later variants for fighter-bomber role 2/

And we cancel F-35B

So basically an AD OCU and a Multi-role OCU.

An AD OCU ... hmm could that relate to 100 Sqn? Replace the Hawk T1s with Typhoons?

My only SDSR wish is the RAF takes back Cottesmore for the extra Typhoons. :thumb:

As much as I'd love to see this happen, in the current world of cut, cut, cut I just can't see it! Unless some other capability such as the E-3, Sentinel or Shadow is axed in order to fund it. Also, as has been mentioned before, do we actually have enough Pilots anymore??

Steve.

But would the Times defence correspondent be tweeting it without cast-iron sources? If she's wrong she's going to look pretty silly in just a few days. I'd say there's something to it.

Bear in mind that the Times defence correspondent believes the jets are stored, so she's wrong on that. All signs point to additional fast jet squadrons however. As for which base, Leeming seems an obvious choice.

There's about 17 stored at Warton that haven't been delivered yet, I've no idea where she gets the rest from though !

My understanding is that they'll go to a reactivated RAF Kinloss, along with the new fleet of P8 Poseidons.

Well why not eh?

The Americans have yet to announce what their plans are for their RC-135s once Mildenhall closes. There's a lot of assuming they're going to use Waddington but a decision hasn't been made public yet.

Yeah - I know what you mean Tony, but I dread to think how many of the current fleet haven't flown in the last 3 months. There's loads that are used as weapons loading trainers and as "hangar queens", not to mention the amount that disappear into the TMF at Coningsby for months on end.

What percentage of the entire fleet do you reckon have actually flown in the last 3 months (excluding those at Warton, which have been handed over (13 I think) - but not delivered yet)?

I'd say it's less than 60%.

A bilateral agreement with our new best friends France could be made with RAF donating the best Sentry airframes and spares to supplement the four that France uses, guess some aircrew could transfer as well.
RAF Waddington becomes a detachment base for a French / NATO / USAF AWACS and still has the flight sim / ground based training system.
The removal of the eight RAF Sentry's and all the heavy maintenance required to support them free up a big hangar and ramp for .....

Let me think .....

How about basing the shiny new P-8 there, and we still get to keep the golf course

The runway extension work was originally stated to be able to operate the RC-135 safely. No new hangars ever proposed for the RC-135, assume they would share with the E-3's. If the E-3 goes more space for RC-135 / P-8.
Indeed very long term plan could be to operated an AEW version of the B737. Who else other than Turkey and Australia have them ?
Huh - when I were a lad Snow white only had seven Dwarfs (ZH101-ZH107)? And one of those (ZH105) was euthanaised after some "back problems" and its spare parts harvested to try and keep it's six brothers healthy.

Indeed there were only Seven RAF E-3s

When we purchased them in 1986, it was for 6 with 2 options of which one was added the other wasn't.

EDIT South Korea also use the AEW version of the 737, or P7 as the Aussies call it

Well it looks like they've found a use for at least one of the Voyager surge fleet:

Telegraph: David Cameron and senior ministers to get dedicated plane
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politic ... plane.html

-----
The government will announce next week that it will spend £10million refitting an RAF plane which is normally used for air-to-air refuelling.

...

...government source insisted that the converted RAF plane will not be "luxurious" in stark contrast to the jets used by other World leaders.

...

...when the plane is not in use it will return to military refuelling duties.
So if the refueling equipment is going to remain in place so that it can still serve as a tanker, and it's not going to get a luxurious interior, then what precisely needs "refitting"?

I suppose a benefit of this is that if ever the PM needs to fly over/into somewhere dangerous, they will actually be able to trail a couple of Typhoon escorts with them as "aerial bodyguards"!

And another point - I suppose this means that 32 Sqn's 146s are now a candidate for cutting?

Presumably more communications equipment.

They cut the 32 Sqn Bae125s this year and kept the pair of 146s that were part of a UOR. Alongside the other 2older jets which rarely do PM work now

I don't think they do much (if any) Royal work either.

From what I read it seems it's all about interpretation.....my understanding is that:

This is replacing a capability the VC-10 had up until the early 2000s so nothing new

It's not to replace any short haul options currently available - it's to replace the chartering of long haul/wide body jets that the RAF can't currently provide

The A330 will do normal AAR duties but also have A330 business class seating and amenities added to support VVIP long haul pax

It all makes sense, good on them

Agreed, this is adding (reinstating) a capability, not replacing existing, hence this proposal should not directly affect the current fleet as is.

The dedicated Voyager wont be one single aircraft, they will just insert a corporate config in to which ever aircraft is allocated, that's what meant by the term "refitting".
