Even more cuts proposed
Even more cuts proposed
This on the BBC this morning http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41511790
"A senior Royal Marine officer blamed the introduction of the new carriers for exacerbating the senior service's financial and manning problems.
He told the BBC: "This is the worst procurement decision of the past half century - that's what the Royal Marines are being sacrificed for."
The proposed cuts are part of a raft of "adjustments" being considered by all three services - the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force - as the Ministry of Defence struggles to balance its books.
The Royal Air Force could slow down orders of its new F35 fighter, and the Army could lose dozens of helicopters as part of their efforts towards the same goal."

All because of 2 grey car ferries we didn't/don't need!

One thing is certain. Politicians never learn.
MISSING - x1 Air Force.
If found please return to the UK.

Re: Even more cuts proposed
Been there before. The solution then, as it should be now, is to fire those that have a record of procurement incompetence, financial mismanagement and a lack of common sense. During the Cold War 10% of GDP was spent on defence, now 2.5%. The MOD keeps overspending because it orders what it either can't afford or does not need. VTOL "Carriers" that have no defensive weapons and insufficient escorts and crew available. Do we need/afford Carriers; scrap them, ouch? Instead buy more aircraft and ships to control the Atlantic (not necessarily the limited, expensive Boeing P8) and if distant countries want our help they will provide bases. If we need F35s buy the most effective and cheapest (not VTOL).

We can thank Gordon Brown for that decision - a political one made purely to preserve jobs in Scotland.Supra wrote:All because of 2 grey car ferries we didn't/don't need!

A.k.a "A senior officer in a part of the Royal Navy not having so much money spent on it complains it's not getting so much money spent on it."welshandy wrote:"A senior Royal Marine officer blamed the introduction of the new carriers for exacerbating the senior service's financial and manning problems.
I often think some military officers wouldn't last two minutes in a for-profit business environment, a.k.a. the real world.

The assembly took place in the Firth of Forth at Rosyth Dockyard from nine blocks built in six UK shipyards: BAE Systems Surface Ships in Glasgow, Babcock at Appledore, Babcock at Rosyth, A&P Tyne in Hebburn, BAE at Portsmouth and Cammell Laird at Birkenhead.
The last being not that far from you, so it wasn't just Scotland that benefited, and quite a lot of the workers at Rosyth came from all over the UK.

Sadly the MOD only exists now for corporate profits of which you can be sure that our fine upstanding politicians are major shareholders, that's why we keep ending up with overpriced inadequate pieces of kit that in a lot of cases are actually leased and not owned. I would be glad to be stood corrected but the current situation speaks for itself,a complete and utter shambles.

Re: Even more cuts proposed
Is this all because of Brexit ??
Re: Even more cuts proposed
Not because of Brexit? Perhaps we should threaten the EU with deporting the (ir)responsible idiots who can't run an efficient MOD. What's the next procurement project to run late or over budget, or unfit for use, or cancelled because it's all three. Army SA 80 rifle, Nimrod, Carriers, etc,.

Re: Even more cuts proposed
Perhaps the MOD should be made up of a Council of 20 or so Senior F.C members, 'cos we know far more about the country's military requirements than the current MOD does. Then, having decided what we need, all we have to do is find the money. Simples!!!.

Cut back on the NHS - if people had to buy their own health insurance they might look after themselves a bit better - a win win scenario.
Then the government can buy more weapons .

They already do buy their health insurance. It's called National Insurance.
Re: Even more cuts proposed
The problem is the available money is wastfully spent, either on grandiose projects (gelded carriers with no planes yet because they have only a ski jump - why not an angled flight deck as well?) an army rifle that has been rebuilt several times because it didn't work (the original rifle design did but apparently when moved to a private contractor it was redesigned to make it cheaper to make), the Nimrod rebuild whose costs escalated so much it was cancelled after £6bn spent (the final straw was the only original part left, the fuselages, varied too much with regard to the fuselage wing hole).

"A week is a long time in politics." New Boss for MOD. Boeing attack on Bombardier threatens jobs in Northern Ireland (DUP support essential to May) - Airbus buy stake which Boeing will not like. MOD so overspent that major item is now likely to be chopped, reducing people won't save enough. Carriers, P8, F35 all or some versions, frigates, etc.

Indeed, I can still see the chance of the P-8 ever appearing getting very close to zero.

Armed Forces denied extra funding as cash diverted to cyber warfare by adviser 'determined to screw over MoD'
The Armed Forces will not receive any extra funding as a result of a major national security review, the Ministry of Defence has been told. Ministers had hoped to avoid potentially damaging cuts to the military if the review recommended a boost in MoD resources to fight terrorism.
But The Telegraph has learned that Mark Sedwill, the national security adviser, believed it was more important to increase funding to fight cyber-attacks than bolster the Armed Forces.
Amid growing public anger among Tory MPs and former senior officers at the scale of the possible cuts, Gavin Williamson, the new Defence Secretary, was set to have a showdown meeting this week with Philip Hammond. Mr Williamson, who is due to make his first appearance at the dispatch box since replacing Sir Michael Fallon three weeks ago, wants an extra £2 billion a year to prevent a fresh round of potentially devastating cuts.
