.... and so on to the next update on the Demon.

Now I`ve spent a long time going over the colour schemes applied to 74`s Demon`s and it seems to be a controversial, albeit polite, issue on some modelling forums. We can say for sure that the profile I posted previously is probably incorrect in most part.

I have received a number of official documents dated 1935/6 with a number of pictures, some of which have been `tinted` to show off the various colours used during the camouflage trials at the time. However I also noted that there were some inconsistencies between the tinted photo`s and the untinted ones.

I can tell you that the sqn records state that local colour dopes were used and the scheme was based on the `salamander` type from WWI. Other official reports from the sqn to the Air Ministry state they included green/grey and brown. Note that it says green/grey and not green and grey. (was this a mix of colours or a typo??). We also know that Dark Earth was mixed with red dope to replicate the `Malta soil`.

So what conclusion have I come to?

Well the simple answer is, I just don`t know. I can neither confirm or deny in exact detail what colour dopes were used in which way with any certainty.

So my next best guess is that various schemes and colourings were applied to the Demon`s as part of the experimental trials set out by the RAE. It is highly likely that over time the colours changed to better suit the environment as one colour tone proved more successful than the previous.

So here`s what I`ve come up with based on what the Demon`s may of looked like during the first trials. Bare in mind also the photo`s are bright, it`s not quite finished painting yet and as usual, the varnish finish will deepen the shades. I mixed dark earth with red to create the `rust` colour and it is my belief that this shade was mainly used on the fuselage.

Spent the last few days adding the struts which needed about 24 hours to cure for each section so that the top wing unit is stable enough. The struts were a bit difficult at times but got there in the end.

Added the main struts first....

Image

..... then 24 hours later turned the main section upside down and connected it to the upper wing.

Image

One thing to note about the last picture. I now have photo evidence that roundels were added to the under sides. Most descriptions I could find prior only ever state upper wing markings were applied and not much else.

Another 24 hours later......

Image

.... and the other struts were added and the wing assembly is completed and pretty secure.

Image

Final picture shows that glossing, decaling, matt glossing and then adding a wash have been completed.

And so onto the u/c part of the build.

Cheers paddy.

Pretty much the main build completed now with just a few bits to add as well as some touch ups where needed and then it`s onto the rigging.

Out of all the build where issues did arise, perhaps amazingly that tail skid caused the worst of the stress......!!

Hi TC :P

I would have a guess at the scheme you will be building, but I think it would be fruitless

Keep us mere mortals posted, buddy

Very best regards as always

Cheers Patrick. :)

After working the whole weekend, I`ve only managed to cut, trim and smooth off some of the resin cockpit parts.

As you will see, the nose and cockpit areas don`t quite line up as they should and will need a bit of attention to correct. Hopefully submerging them in hot water will help.

So as of last night here`s where I`m at......

Image

Now try as I might with hot water, a hair dryer or a bit of brute force, the cockpit tub section is still wider than the nose section......

Image

Image

I had carefully cut and trimmed the sections down to size as suggested by the destruction's, but it was obvious from the start that it seems I have the `runt of the litter`with this conversion set.

I`m going to have to use a bit of filler on the gaps and get my old trusty file out. Well then..., that`s my weekend sorted....

Oooeer you cetainly have :O :O :O :O :O I remember a little filler with mine which you would expect from this short run type of conversion but nothing like that ...ouch :(
Good luck with it ...keep going

Cheers guys. :)

So with a little bit elbow grease, the right file and a light spray of silver to check and highlight any further issues, I`m saying this is as corrected as I`m going to make it. From previous experience, any more work on it may make it worse and it looks streamlined and blended in enough to me if you compare it to the previous pictures.

(I added the seats for effect in the first picture and these need to be finished).

Paul
 I no doubt did..., but I`m gonna persevere using some of the old `Tiger` spirit. In this case, JD and Coke.

So if you love the majestic lines and shape of the Hawker Hunter.....,

.... then turn away now... :D

Image

Getting there slowly.

Need to leave this to set for 24 hours before rubbing the excess off. I might even need to redo it and that will be another 24 hours. I can then start on the wings and that`s another 48 hours or so. Who said modelling was fun....??

You will get there I am sure

Its only a piece of plastic it wont beat you

Cheers
