PEA GB 1/72 Hasegawa EKA-3B Skywarrior

Post by ArabJazzie » Sat Sep 08, 2012 9:13 pm

Hello again,
The main event for this GB in the shape of the Douglas Whale! Its an aircraft i have always wanted to replicate after seeing 3 of them sitting at Lossiemouth while i was on annual atc camp back in '88. They spent most of the week sat on VASS waiting for their trade to join them but due to various reasons, it wasnt until the last minute that 7 Ex-Alconbury F-5Es arrived on their way to a new life with the USN!

Anyway, the box n sprues.

I just hope i can restart from where i stopped and do a good enough job on this.
Arabest,
Geoff.

Me again!
Seen as TC put the hurry up on me in the middle of a busy time with work, i thought id better get an update now im on holiday! The wings were put on not long ago and the few seams that required it were filled and faired in. It then sat until this week then the lumps, bumps and aerials were fitted to the fuselage to get to this stage.

Its now been primed but i may flat it before the next coat goes on then its engines to be painted and built but that may take some time as im heading for some new ground with them.
Arabest,
Geoff.

Nothing since just after the last update! Dropped No1 daughter off at ATC band camp at Altcar weekend before last then took off on a 4 day tour of England, back home for 3 days then Altcar again to pick her up. So not much time for kits but should start at em again very soon.

Hello again all,
Over the last wee while ive managed to get this one primed and the gloss white bits painted then it sat for a week till last night. Eventually took 3 sitting to get the white masked off and knock the main wheel doors off!
Image
Then due to its bigger pot, the old airbrush was taken out of retirement to give this a coat of Hu129.
Image
Due to the way i like to mask canopies and the lack of a defined edge to the framing, i used a hairy stick to paint it! Some tidying to come on that!
Image
Off to start the engines!

Hi again.
Keeping this one ticking over and just have a few bits to finish and all should be good!

Started to build the engines which brought the Alclads out again. Didnt have steel but dark aluminium to my eye, seemed to fit the bill. Might just be that the base coat is only Halfords white primer.
Image
These are now enclosed in their pods and about to be painted.

Combining the update on both airframes for this GB with the E-2 painted, de-ice boots done with a sharpie pen and all Kleared for decals.
Image

The Whale has had all the bumps finished off and any touch ups carried out. Due to this being the biggest aircraft i have sprayed to date, i didnt like the finish on one of the wings so the white bits were masked on that wing and another coat of grey sprayed on. Only thing is, this now put off the other wing so a quick and careful dusting sorted that out.
Image

Away to put a coat of Klear on this which should see some decals flying about on both of these, and a previous failed GB! :halo:

More on Wednesday.
Arabest,
Geoff.

Hi all,
Keeping this one ticking over and im sure you notice, there are no engines fitted........

.....YET!

I took a decision at the start that the way i needed to paint the engines meant that these would be built last. On the down side, Hasegawa doesnt help with this process as two of the worst fitting parts are the engine pylon/wing join!!! Got em built and primed the other day and fettled the RH pylon to provide as little a gap as possible. The LH one however fought me all the way!!!! :grr: The blend at the leading egde, well gap, had 2 slivers of plasticard glued in and then shaped. This produced a lovely tight join.......that knocked off the front locating pin. Out came the brass rod and super glue to then have to repeat the process after knocking off the other locating pin!!!!!!!!!!!!! :grr: :'(

Alls well in the end as a wee bit more of a fettle at the leading edge join and all looks good enough! Pictures to follow soon.
