If its MR3 you wanted Revell had you covered with the old FROG reissue, despite rivet sizes to the extent you could use it as a file, the shape and detail was pretty much spot on. I built a few, including a botched attempt at an MR2 conversion.

Regards,

Rich

Let me guess... no access to a belt sander to get the rivets off? :)

I never actually bothered sanding the rivets, ok they were a little overdone...

But I think a Shack isn't that smooth a skin anyhow (Richw_82 can confirm)

Rich, would the interior layout of an MR.2 be different to an AEW.2 as i expect?

Only slightly in the later aircraft, Phase 2 and Phase 3

The desks are all in the same position but with different equipment fit (ASV21 and Sonics for the MR2, AN/APS 20 scopes for the AEW2), and there's one navigators position on the AEW2 rather than the two on the MR2. The second navigators table was removed and a rack for the Collins radio sets put in, and a control panel for the 200V AC inverters.

Up front the gun turret was removed (but the seat retained) to make room for the oxygen crates.

The early version of the Shack MR2 was substantially different inside - in that there was no galley as such and various internal bulkheads were in different places to account for the mid upper turret. It bore much more resemblance to the MR1, and Lanc/Lincoln in layout.

Ok that shot past me like a Buccaneer at full chat! But I that confirms my suspicion. So Airfix have messed up the Shackleton!

Not quite messed up, the difference in equipment fit isn't that far off, which is why if you can find the earlier parts you can retro fit the 1:1 example as w're doing currently .Most of what we're fitting has come from an MR3. Unless an aftermarket supplier wants to make replacement 1/72 Sonics 1C sets to replace the AN/APS20 scopes (which is all a one piece moulding on the Airfix kit) its pretty close.

That is - unless you want to fit a mid -upper turret then you have to sacrifice the galley - which is one of the reasons why its not in the Airfix kit. If you look in the instructions, to build the 'A' scheme you leave the galley bulkhead out, which is correct. We looked at doing it with WR963 and sourced a turret cupola, but the work involved was way too much to be doing.

I'll give them their due, they've done a stunning job in duplicating yours. Personally I'll be doing one without the turret, so that part doesn't bother me. More that you can't see the interior in any way once you've sealed the fuselage. Especially after i'd spent so long working on it ;)
