Vulcan XH558 in 2011.All posts here please.

Has anybody else heard anything about XH558 being based at Wittering from this April?

I've heard it from two people now, and apparently it's widely known info on the base...

Is this just a base rumour gone mad, or is there something to it? :S

With flying operations provisionally due to cease at Lyneham by August it would make sense plans are already in place for a new home.

Im not sure but im guessing the ground crew, staff, etc are mainly from Leicestershire, because of the Vulcan being at Bruntingthorpe for so long before going to Lyneham, that this means they will be closer to home, thus negating the costs of digs, hotels, whatever in Wiltshire? Im probably wrong though  :D

Was the rumour two weeks ago. If true XH558 will use the old 20(R) /4(R) Sqn hangar, which was built when Wittering was a V-bomber base.

If Wittering is an ex-V-Bomber Force anyway then it would make sense for the Mighty 558 to be based at Wittering. Was she ever based there when it was a V-Base?

I think she was mainly at Waddington (and another base I can't remember the name of).

Is she even airworthy and holding a caa certificate of airworthiness ?

It has been very quite on 558 front this winter not that I've been paying much attention as personally I think its about time she found a permanent home to finally retire and remain grounded

Since it moved to Lyneham, the regular engineering updates have pretty much ceased. So there's limited information about airworthyness, other than a few occasional bits posted of their Facebook page.

Cosford Air Show has apparently booked it, but the Vulcan team aren't saying so.

To the scrap heap, so people can get their wasted money back?

In all honesty, I think it should be sent back to Bruntingthorpe and keep in ground taxyable condition, like the rest of their aircraft.

The aircraft should be in fine form this season, with very little work service wise this past winter, 2011 should be a good year.
Wittering if the rumours are true is not the best place to base her, thou if it is cheap and keeps the cost down all is good.

Problem with accesse out of season as allways been the problem, Lyneham being off limits for the public unless special weekends.
Wittering is not the best place to see anything from the outside wire, with it being still Military again public viewing will be poor once again.

Yes i must agree with her going back to Brunti to fast Taxi, this she can do for many many years, and not end up a dead decaying wreck in a Museum.
there is no reason why this could not happen if the people involved really do care about the aircraft, if not then its been a project of finacial greed if they scrap her or send her to a museum.

End of the day when she can not be flown due to lack of engine life or airframe, then she should be handed over to anyone that can keep her as a ground runner.
why waste the millions spent when people can still see and feel the power at Fast taxi run days for a few decades more.

This is only a suggestion but If they could afford it and I'm aware it's run by volunteers how about "basing" XH558 at Elvington?

No Reason for it not to go there either.
Just that people talk past tense when 558 went to Brunti from Waddo and she was fast taxied for many years by volunteers.

Southend can do it and Wellbourne can do it no reason for 558 not to carry on.

I'm glad of it being given a new home. I have to say, whatever the feeling about the people who run it, I dont understand people who would rather have a big military jet grounded than in the air. TVOC have said it wont fly after 2012 anyway, so I'd prefer to enjoy the sight (and sound) of a Vulcan for another 18 months and let her be maintained in the tranquility of Wittering(!) than be dumped at her resting place early. I'm also glad my 3 year old will be able to say he saw a Vulcan fly.

I think she was mainly at Waddington (and another base I can't remember the name of).

Try Scampton, where she spent most of her life long before going to Waddington.

She was also at Finningley (Now Doncaster/Sheffield Airport).

Yes, Finningley was the one I couldn't remember. Wasn't aware about Scampton though.

Sounds like they've got a busy season ahead, and at least this year it should be ready for the start of the airshow season.

Try the 'Engineering' section on the official website. There's a thread dedicated to the ongoing winter service and it's currently updated almost daily by the engineers.
