Bristol Brabazon hangars.

Post by Alfie » Fri Sep 07, 2018 3:21 pm

I know not really a subject for this forum, but they are talking about pulling the Brabazon hangars at Filton Airfield down either to make way for a entertainment arena and complex or just a development of the usual mixture of industrial, commercial or living accommodation. Surely such a piece of the UK aviation heritage should be listed and saved to remind people of the historic past that Bristol played in the UK's aviation history.

Arena plan was scrapped earlier this week, they're safe for the time being.

City centre plans for the Arena were scrapped on Arena Island which left it open for an alternative private funded proposal at Filton Airfield or if that was a no go a mixed development on the site.

I might be completely wrong, but I think anyone can ask a Council to 'list' a structure even if they don't own it.

The owners are usually the last people to want a structure listed, specially if they have purchased it for redevelopment.

I thought they were going to use the Hangars as the stadium.
"Spanning a whopping 352 metres, the hangar has one of the largest continuous footprints in Europe and holds the potential to be turned into a unique arena, which incorporates the building's historic features."

I heard the current plan won't result in an external changes anyway.

What is the point of listing them?

Give them grade 1 status and they can't be changed inside or outside - having to retain their function of aircraft hangars. Without a runway? Not much use I'd suggest.

Give them grade 2 status meaning the exterior will stay as is, but any changes to the inside will cost a whole load more? Again far from useful.

People keep giving structures grade 1 listings and in many cases it just means the building will be left to decay and fall down.

Looking at the pictures of the proposed Areana development on the local BBC West of England news, unless you knew they were the Brabazon hangars they would be unrecognizable to most people.

The brabazon hangars contain a lot of asbestos from what I last heard, and will require a lot of work to get them in any sort of state where the public can gain access to them!

I believe they tried to get the hangars listed a couple of years ago but it was rejected. It wouldn't surprise me if they had a lot of asbestos in them because of when they where built. But this will have to be removed no matter what they do with the building.

Some Bristol Rovers fans think that will be their new ground.
